Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Really, of the big 4, the only guy I was staunchly against was Josh Allen. Rumors on Rosen's attitude had me a little nervous, too.
so speaking of this

Some good throws but like 7 interceptable balls including one of the most Weeden-esque plays I've seen

Regardless of where you stood on Baker thank God we didn't take Josh Allen

Every few years there is a player that gets irrational hype going into the draft, they go in the first two rounds, and they always end up like shit. The Browns have drafted a ton of them. Ex: Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden, Johnny Manziel, and DeShone Kizer.

Thank fucking God we avoided Tim Tebow and Josh Allen.

Baker looked like he belonged on the field with NFL caliber players. Not overwhelmed, not shellshocked. He threw the ball were it was needed. He threw either a catchable ball, or threw it away. He had a presence about him that we have not seen in a long time from a Browns QB draftpick.

Would it shock you to know the last time a team went an entire game without throwing a pass... It was the Otto Graham led Cleveland Browns in 1950. And they won in a classic Municipal Stadium mud wrestling match against the Eagles.

For me personally, I like to embrace historic Cleveland. It ties me to my family and ancestry, especially no longer living there. If that is so wrong, I suppose I could finally give in and become a Bay Area smug asshat. I prefer the former.

I just beg someone who gets an autograph from Baker to say "Thank you, you are going to be the best Browns QB since Otto Graham and keep a straight face"

Because you know Baker will google it to find out the dude played in the 50's.

The accuracy on this play still has me dancing to disco music. We haven't seen shit like this in forever, the potential is sky high right now.

I know this is the Baker thread, but I cant remember in years a Browns player being able to make a catch like that. Then the one of the middle for the TD by Calloway was underrated. He was being held and because of the hold, the CB was able to get his hands in there yet Calloway kept his concentration, caught the ball, and broke away for the TD.

And he is at best our 3rd best recievier, 5th if you count Duke and Njoku.

Yeah. I've kept pretty quiet about it because it wasn't a productive conversation when I brought it up about Kizer, but it was pretty excessive after Kizer's first start with people calling the QB position finally solved.

I was very happy with how Baker looked. But it's important not to get too high or too low on preseason games, or even a small sample size of regular season games. It's going to take a pretty significant amount of games for me to declare something that has been a constant problem for 20 years solved.

Hate it but I agree. That said I think the QB position is trending positively. I think?

Only if the guy asking for an autograph seamlessly ends with the question, "How many Nazis have you killed?"

You know what sticks out to me? I still can't wrap my head around how calm and poised he was..like it made me calm watching him. Also, absurd pocket presence ..how he feels pressure already like he's been doing this for years in the NFL,especially after watching Kizer, ... Like that's shit makes me feel like a kid again the night before cedar point.

That 3rd and 18 how he stepped up feeling the pressure and instead of taking off, his head was up the whole time and delivered a nice throw over the middle. The Td to Njoku , the backshoulder throw to Higgins, the Slant to Calloway. The multiply 3rd downs he picked up with his feet, BUT still always looking downfield. Shit you dont see from a rookie.

Agree with still needing to fix throwing off his back foot, idk he still makes it work because he's so accurate. But that fixed? With experience and possibly getting to watch/sit and come along slowly. My God.

I know its just the first preseason game. But at least to ME, he hasn't given me any reason to doubt him. So far, his trend is continuing.

Yeah I’ve definitely learned from the Kizer thing...but even with Kizer I felt more like I was seeing flashes of a kid who had a bright future.

Even at his best in the preseason his quarterbacking didn’t seem like it could produce methodical, sustained drives. He would make a nice play here and there and randomly we’d get a flashy bomb down field. He did a decent job navigating the pocket every now and then too.

Baker’s performance seemed a little more sustainable though. He just seemed like he was a seasoned vet back there doing his thing. Not sure how high his ceiling will be, but his floor seems reasonably high due to his accuracy, ability to navigate the pocket, and IQ.

Excited for Friday to see if he can build on it.

I didn't watch a bit of Sam Darnold play tonight. However, I did see the box score. A 5.3 avg. pass completion? I guess it is a lot easier to get decent numbers pass completion numbers when you're not trying to throw it down field.
