Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fair or unfair, a lot of people on this board did NOT consider Mayfield to be on the same tier as Rosen and Darnold.

I admit I was one, though I felt he was light-years ahead of Allen.

I know a lot of people who work in Barea liked Darnold during the college season. The tipping point seemed to be when Dorsey brought in Scot McCloughan as a consultant. Theres a lot of football to be played and Mayfield will eventually have some struggles, but McCloughan deserves some kudos for making an against the grain assessment.
Although, it’s possible that Darnold also ends up as a very good quarterback.

I was not keen on either Baker nor Darnold, so I wanted Barkley number 1 and whichever was left at number 4.. But I admit that assessment was not better than a hot take.

Jury is out until we are through a season, but I like Mayfields attitude. If Darmold was a typical personality, i could see that intangible being a factor in taking Mayfield first..

If mayfeld and darnold have similar careers, one could argue that Barkley would be a better addition than Ward, but so far Ward has been solid and it appears he will start. Barkley has been very good in preseason, but that could be because he has a run blocking oline.. not exactly our strength...

Personally, I think the Giants are going to really regret picking Barkley over Darnold and Rosen.

If those guys end up being just above average, they’ll still be more valuable than Barkley even if Barkley becomes the next Adrian Peterson.

The gap between QB and RB in value and importantance is just so extreme.

I firmly believe this as well. They have Eli on his last legs as a QB with nothing behind him. They are picking 2 in what would seem to be a very good QB class. When will they have the opportunity to pick this high again with such great QB prospects on the board?

Even if Barkley is the next AP, it was a foolish move and the Giants will pay for it in years to come.

McCloughan was on the Baker train from day 1. Dorsey seemed to jump on board very early as well.

The rushing yards from RB have diminished in importance. The receiving has increased. If he can catch screens, swing passes, and occasionally be split wide, he can do some damage. You get an explosive athlete and figure out how to use him.

That’s what they were thinking anyway. However I agree w you, I don’t see it.

Too many low or negative yardage rushes.

Most importantly, this was a great time for continuity if they got their next QB.

It’s also possible that they didn’t have the available QBs left graded as worthy of the top 2 picks. The most likely explanation to me is that they screwed up. Time will tell.

Yeah the Barkley pick was bad, but a segment of Browns fans on Twitter and Facebook refuse to let it go that we didn’t draft a RB #1 overall for the first time in over 20 years

The hype machine on Barkley has been extraordinary

I can’t understand those fans nor people like you, buddy boy, who care to spend any bandwidth reading or replying to these fools.

They might be right - Barkley goes to the HOF or Baker sucks. But Baker is a Brown. He is one of us. You and I are on the team, obviously! He’s our guy and we will focus on rooting for him.

Plus, right now, our pick just threw for over 10 yards per attempt while Sequon just left practice with a limp.

Ok guys let’s not pit both of my boys against each other you’re putting me into a bind here

Let's just say Barkley ends up being one of the three best running backs in the league (I don't think he will, but for argument's sake) and the Giants bounce back from a miserable year to have a decent season where they show improvement record wise.

Then what?

Yeah, you have Barkley and that's great, but how are you going to get the next QB? Eli's not getting any younger and certainly isn't going to get any better.

I just don't get it.

Agree to agree.

I can only assume that they decided the QBs weren’t that good. I don’t know what else they could be thinking. Reload via FA?

I don’t think it adds up, but when I say “what were they thinking?” I am not asking a rhetorical question. Just trying to guess what the LT plan is.

This is true, and why you need to utilize these guys much more in the passing game. I wanted Darnold and the DE, but Mayfield & Ward seem to be proving me wrong, so I'll take it.

I do wonder what the new tackling rules do to RB's though. Could increase their value a good deal.

I was a HUGE fan of taking Baker before we drafted him. I watched hours of tape (not highlights - ALL of their passes) of each of the top 4 QBs in the draft (Baker, Darnold, Allen, Rosen). Baker blew them out of the water. I had no pre-bias either... I don't watch college football and don't care to. It wasn't Baker's system - it was his ability to:

1. Read the defense pre-snap
2. Pick a high-efficient target as a result
3. Make multiple reads and cycle through options quickly if that initial target isn't open
4. Demonstrate pocket presence and awareness of defenders and blitzes
5. Deliver the ball powerfully and accurately

He protects the ball well, makes good decisions but does it while being a gun-slinger. He's not an ultra-conservative good decision-maker. He has been relatively healthy and can make plays with his feet. Darnold fumbles all the time and fails against talent, Rosen crumbles under pressure and will likely stay hurt, and Allen just plain sucks. Strong arm and nothing else.

The ONLY knock against Baker was just his height. If he were 6'4, he would've been the consensus #1 overall and likely Andrew Luck-ish can't-miss pick. So you have to ask yourself... why would you allow his height (which isn't even THAT bad... he's practically 6'2) overshadow all of the above?

I'm sorry, but the rest of the guys just didn't compare to Baker and I saw that. I knew it. I'm so glad we drafted him and it's fun to look back at threads and see all the fans who were mad. Baker hasn't PROVEN anything yet, but I guarantee they're not feeling quite the same way about him right now.
