Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Not sure how anyone could freak out like the comments above because he's having a little fun with the whole Dorsey thing. That shows me he's relaxed and comfortable here already to do things like that.

Regarding Mayfield and starting, however.. I am wondering why the Browns aren't giving him at least a chance to win the starting gig. I get it that we want him to sit for a few months, likely the season.. But I disagree with not giving him a chance to surprise us and take the job from Tyrod Taylor. I'm pretty sure if Taylor loses a quarter or a few snaps with the ones he won't be hurting. He's a veteran and ready to roll.

I would much rather see where this kids at overall. I believe he very well could win this job if the Browns actually made it a competition, instead of giving the job over and keeping it like that no matter what.

I don't see Mayfield winning the job, but I don't know. Anything is possible.. I would still love to give him a shot that's legit.

I love Baker. You want a super boring vanilla personality like Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco? No thanks, give me the cocky, hard living SOB any day.

Baker was my third choice behind Darnold and Rosen mainly because of his (lack of) height.

But between his obvious talent on the field, his excellent all around attitude, and the way he seems to be totally savoring each day and having fun he has completely won me over. I'm starting to love the young man, and by comparison both Darnold and Rosen seem dull. I hope things just continue with the track they're on with Baker.

Through two weeks, here are how each of the 32 first-round rookies from the 2018 NFL Draft have graded in their first professional action:

PICK NO. 1: BAKER MAYFIELD, CLEVELAND BROWNS
2018 Preseason Grade: 86.3
Mayfield has gone from being our highest-graded college quarterback in 2017 to the No. 1 player on our big board, to first overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, to the highest-graded rookie quarterback through two weeks of the preseason. In two outings, the former Heisman Trophy winner has been clinical when operating from a clean pocket and has completed 14-of-23 pass attempts for 217 yards and two touchdowns, all good for a passer rating of 121.1 – the third-highest rating we’ve ever recorded by a rookie quarterback with at least 20 attempts. In addition to his success from a clean pocket, Mayfield has also done a great job of protecting the football and is still yet to throw a turnover-worthy pass. Through two weeks of preseason action, his offensive grade of 86.3 is good for third among quarterbacks with at least 20 dropbacks and is more than 10.0 points higher from the next-closest quarterback from his class.

And Baker should have at least 1 more touchdown - but it was called back twice (penalty, and a knee out of bounds before the 2nd foot touched).

In 40 dropbacks, Mayfield has made multiple reads 15 times (37.5% of the time) compared to just 6 of 33 dropbacks for Darnold (18.1%).

Darnold has been more accurate on short, quicker throws but Mayfield has done a significantly better job attacking down the field and going through progressions. Mayfield has been tremendously good coming off his first read, finding soft spots in zones with arm strength and accuracy.

Mayfield has also had two passes dropped compared to Darnold with zero.

Darnold has been more apt to "my primary isn't open, I better run before I get sacked" where Mayfield's runs have been more of a "I've exhausted all my options, let's pick up some yards with the legs".

Looks like Baker is a lot better at intermediate to long passes than Tyrod. He just isn't afraid to pull the trigger and deliver the ball accurately and on time on throws that I think Tyrod doesn't have the arm strength to make. I still want to give Mayfield time to fully adjust to the size/speed/schemes of the NFL. But I think the time will come where he's essentially kicking down the door to the starting job. Tyrod will have to play at his highest level and that will have to translate into wins to hold Mayfield off. I think it's going to be fun to watch this unfold.
