Thoughts after the regular season's conclusion:
1. Baker Mayfield made so many awesome throws against the Ravens. He made multiple throws where there was only **one** place to put the ball for a chance at a completion. And he put it precisely in those spots. That's the kind of accuracy required to pass for 300+ against the #1 defense in the league. His first two INTs were not good passes. His last INT... was just a great play by the defender. Wish he could have that final pass attempt to Landry back. Oh well, at least the Steelers got fucked.
2. David Njoku keeps getting better. Baker trusts him. That jump ball was a "you're covered, but your taller than the other guy... so I'll throw it". Njoku's non-TD was a sick catch. I think it was a TD as the ball didn't move after he secured it, even if it scraped the ground. He also consistently, used his size to his advantage while separating easily from LBs sent to cover him, and then catch him post-reception. He really did get better each and every game this season. His potential seems to actually be panning out, which is... weird... for one of our draftees. I like Fells and Njoku as our TEs. Devalve looks like he should be good, but hasn't really done anything.
3. Perriman - a nice find. Perfect example of the combo of a good QB and a specific role making him better. Speaks highly of Dorsey for getting him and Kitchens for designing a role for him into the offense. Of course... Baker makes his job a bit easier with great pass after great pass. But nice to see Perriman finishing with the ball in his hands. Getting that TD in Baltimore must have been sweet.
4. Ogunjobi - great awareness. Always fun to watch a guy with talent and brains make key plays. He seemed to show up in key plays all season. With one arm, no less. Great awareness to go right after the ball on Jackson's dive.
5. Credit to Williams (Father and/or Son) who made the adjustment to slow down the Ravens option offense. Wish it had happened sooner, but it happened in-game and happened in time to give the offense a chance to win.
6. No credit to Williams for not challenging that one spot that would have forced a 4th and short for the Ravens. Also, no credit for not only NOT challenging the Njoku endzone-maybe-catch, but bungling his timeout usage in that same period of time. Also, no credit for the first half D, which was atrocious, and let Lamar Jackson do whatever he wanted with his legs and hand-offs.
6. Speaking of, I came away unimpressed with Lamar Jackson. Not because he wasn't effective - clearly he was - but because running an option offense is simply not sustainable, and when he did pass, his passes were... less than stellar. I do think he has the talent to become a much better passer, but he didn't show any of that this game.
7. The Ravens offense really was exactly what the Broncos ran successfully (... for a time...) with Tim Tebow. Read-Option with WRs / TEs running deep ins across the middle... and basically nothing else. The whole thing is powered by the Ravens great interior running... and the Browns solved that late in the 4th Quarter. Funny enough, I could easily see the Browns not only ruining the Steelers season by losing to the Ravens, but ruining the Ravens season by giving the Chargers the blueprint for stopping that interior option run game.
8. So bummed that the season is over. Watching the Williams-Kitchens-Mayfield Browns was a ton of fun. Oh well, I'll just... enjoy... the Cavs... ..... .
