Buying a new laptop.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Get it from BestBuy on sale or get a education discount.

Agree with Hour's assessment. The new Retinas weren't out when I got my Air last fall so the price gap was way more.

Anyone know about the Time Capsule? Hear it's great and I could use a new router. I have a fair amount of Ethernet cable run thru the house as well.

Basic decision would be a new MBP:Retina for me and a time capsule, or like a 27" iMac(or Mac mini server) and a apple router.

(Or point me towards a good router that I can easily pair with signal boosters from the same brand). I know some stuff but I'm not going to install wwrt or tomato

Time Capsule is just Apple rebranding other people's work as their own... Ridiculous really. It's just an 802.11ac router for 'ac' capable wi-fi cards.. But the technology itself is great.

I got my Air last fall and I'm madly in love with it. But like the flyin Hawaiin said, at this point, the MBP is a more sensical purchase.

Gour, you sold me on the Y510P you bastard. Ordering the 16GB RAM, GT755m SLI, 1TB/24GB SSD configuration when I get my vacation pay next week. Lenovo has a $400 off coupon code that expires Feb 5 so it's only $1,199. Definitely going to be the most powerful computer I've ever owned. I've been rocking my iPad exclusively for years so this will be a huge upgrade.

Not worried about the track pad as I'll be using a mouse for gaming anyways.

I'm actually holding off on buying a new laptop. I'm using a mouse, so I don't have to touch the trackpad, and it seems to have solved the issue. I know that eventually I do need to buy a new one, but not within a month. Gour, when I do buy one, I will most likely go with an MBP, and I still will order online and then go pick it up in store.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm writing this right now on the Y510p in a hotel in Manila. It's powerful enough, that I left my other computers behind, with confidence.

Nicky, what do you use your laptop for normally?

I have programs on my MacBook that HP or whatever PC will not have. I get that not everyone likes/appreciates Mac's, but it's all I've known for years.

Edit: Meh, just going with the Y510p.

nicky-there's a $150 off iMac or MacBook best buy coupon that runs thru 4/4 and stacks with any sale price. Just need to know someone with a .edu email.

Typing from my Y510p... So good.

As a former MBP user, switching to this keyboard is seamless.

Thanks gour.

edit: And after all the shit I've heard about Windows 8, it's actually not as bad as I was expecting.

I'm steady using this bitch tough in the Philippines bro.. Machine is a total workhorse. For all it's faults, it's still one of the best PCs on the market, and the upgradeability is just unmatched. SLI in a laptop for $1k? Thats WTF I'm talkin' bout.

That's an all around awesome buy. Lenovo has always had excellent value if you knew where to look. My only question is does it run cool when streaming movies? My last laptop was an HP 16t with a dedicated nVidia 130m. I'm not sure if it ran hot because of the dedicated card... or because of the lack of hardware accelerated h.264. I'm leaning towards the latter.

Anyways my friends never use that much hardware and Intel graphics chips are actually getting pretty solid. At my suggestion, my friend just bought a new Lenovo g500 from microcenter for 399. It had the i5-3230m, 4 GB of ram, and a quality keyboard. That's one very underrated aspect of laptops... the on board keyboard. It has absolutely zero bells and whistles. No media keys, only [power, HDD, caps locks, charging] lights, and the display is a plain 1360*768 that looks washed out at any viewing angle other than perpendicular. But it is very sturdy and the thickness of the chasis actually works for it by providing good airflow.

Some people may hate its simple utilitarian look... but I'm glad Lenovo makes options like these. All the money goes into the meat and potatoes hardware... and that's what some people want at this price point

There was a lot of confusion about whether the system supported Optimus graphics card switching or not, and this was entirely due to poor support info somewhere in the chain. So there were a lot of people actually modding their firmwares to turn Optimus back on; but this isn't necessary.

From the context menu in Windows, you can actually set which application will use which graphics card outright. It's incredibly intuitive. I almost exclusively use the Intel HD card because it's fantastic and supports WiDi out of the box! So streaming media using the Intel HD lets you stream directly to your WiDi compatible TV without any cables, chromecast, or whatever.. Just straight up. It's great.

And yes, so long as the Nvidia 750m is not running, the system is pretty cool. Just keep it in a low-power state, and you'll be fine. Also, if you're worried about heat and battery, there's a few optimizations you can make to allow the system to run like ice. First, swap out the HDD for an SSD. Second, run with at least 16GB RAM, third, keep the CPU clocked at or below 2.4GHz (High clocks create 60-70% of the heat in the case). Don't use the Nvidia Gfx card. And if noise isn't an issue, install the optional Ultrabay fan. System will be cool to the touch, and the left-side exhaust fan will basically be silent.

The look of the laptop is extremely utilitarian, but the HARDWARE that you are getting is unmatched. Top-of-the-line processor (that is upgradable), GOOD memory (Crucial), SSD-caching built in (both upgradable), and fucking SLI?! Let's not forget the fantastic FullHD screen that's gotten top marks from almost every review site online for it's color reproduction, and decent black levels. Only the MBP w/Retina and the new XPS's have a better screen, but neither has this level of features (And I own an MBP w/Retina).

It's just an all-around dope laptop. But I may consider wiping this Windows 8 shit off, and going back to Windows 7.. ;)

Girlfriend is insistent on buying a new laptop cause a tenth of her mac screen is fubar, and the comp is getting kinda shitty anyways

whats the best thing under 500? i'm assuming she can't be picky about features at this low of a price

she is clumsy so an ssd would be nice if possible

touch screen doesnt matter

just simple and reliable

You're probably not going to get a decent laptop with an SSD for under $500. Good SSDs still go for $0.40 - $0.70 per GB, so if she wants at least 250GB that's $100+ on the price already. Something like this might be a good choice for her. You could always spend $100 or so and get the SSD you want and put in yourself (not hard at all).
