If he is reasonably healthy and has 2 good years here, does anyone really think Chris Grant would be willing to commit the kind of long term dollars it would take to keep Bynum?

I just don't see it given his injury history.

Bynum would likely command a near max deal over 4 years if he plays well and often (65+ games a season) here, and some team would be stupid enough to give it to him.

He is on a non-guaranteed deal right now so he will be on his best behavior and likely play through some knee pain. Put $60+ million guaranteed in his pocket, and I would be highly concerned that he doesn't have quite that same level of desire to play through pain and stay in great shape.

I said elsewhere, I love the Bynum signing for these 2 years as it was low risk and we had nothing else to spend the cap space on. No harm no foul.

Going forward, with all the extensions that Grant will need to hand out I just don't see him ever being willing to guarantee Bynum the kind of money he would want if he rehabilitates his career here and hits free agency.

I hope he plays like a stud the next 2 years, but past that he is not a guy that can be trusted to keep it together if he gets a massive payday where he's not playing for a contract anymore.

Certainly there's some solid logic to this. One could even argue that is this the second most likely scenario (the first being that he never gets it together physically in the first place).

And yet...two years from now is quite a lot of time. Ultimately, this is a string of guesses and conjectures. So many moving pieces and variables, the realest, most honest assessment is: who can really say?

Bynum could play okay but not at a max level -- and everyone even him sees it that way. He could decide that he's willing to pay for a semi-discount cause he loves Cleveland so much, or other teams interesting to him could be massively capped out that year, or he plays so well and with such great health and that the new knee procedure he did last spring is a miracle cure and that a max deal for a 28 year old top tier center is the best thing that ever happened to the Cavs and they jump at the chance and then win three straight titles. :dunno:

Too early to sweat it, I think.

I see bynum's minutes limited for what remains of his nba career. I dont see anyone trying to use him as a starter, so a max contract is out of the question. It is in everyones best interest to keep him functional for 10 minutes a game for the next few years, and he gets paid if he can be constructive...

i think if he can give us ten minutes a game, and put up 8 pts and 4 rebounds in the time, we will have done very well.

Got me hyped seeing Jack walk out in the background in the video. The way he walked, seems like he's got the "it" factor.

To me, that "it" factor looked like he was going to take a dump.

My guess is that when Bynum finally does play, he'll be a starter. Not because he's the best option ( which he'd be if he plays 80% of his former self) or the higherst paid, ( which he is regardless), but because of the training staff.

I'm sure the trainers would prefer to know exactly when Bynum is going onto the floor so they can get him ready.

The only two times when the trainers can anticipate his playing time are start of the 1st & 3rd quarters. That would make Bynum a starter.

Good logic. In addition...Mike Brown has stated that whenever Bynum can play, he will start.

Any more news on what Bynum is able to do in camp?

yesterday they said Bynum is now running full court, but isn't cleared for contact yet

Bynum is our version of Walter Jones. He's not going to play any meaningless games, or training camp, but when it gets serious, and it's go time he'll be ready. The nba is such a marathon. there's no real need to rush him back. The cavaliers when their ready should be good enough to make the play offs with out bynum. He shouldn't be an excuse. The just need to get it done and bynum needs to be 100% for the play offs.

Honestly, if he's cleared for full court basketball drills now, I wouldn't think it's unreasonable to have him practicing by november, and playing by late december.

From the PD. No further details:

Andrew Bynum sighting at #Cavs practice today! He's been MIA lately, but is sitting on sidelines, ice wrapped around both knees.

I honestly have no idea what that means. Has he been out there before? Is he usually getting treatment? Does it mean that he's doing some drills during practice and the part that the press sees isn't when he's playing?

I'm not asking you, these are just the things going through my head when I read that tweet.

I think that tweet was just to get some attention to the PD, its too vague to be considered real news IMO

same here. Typical MSB reporting.

This just in! We at the PD can exclusively confirm that Bynum is capable of sitting!

I assume this is a different twist on the same observation, but it contains slightly more content. From The Bullshit Whisperer:

Andrew Bynum progressing, working out. Seen at Cavs practice today. Smiling, ice bags on knees after practice. Still no 5-on-5 tho.
