Cavs should get Stromile Swift

He's pretty much a clone of Drew, but focuses his attention more on the defensive end rather than the offensive. He has a more explosive leap, allowing him to block more shots. He lacks the post moves that Drew has, limiting his offense to alley-oops and dunks from his athleticism. But his defense is much more developed than Drew's and would only flourish more under Mike Brown.

For all of Stro's hops, he's only average at rebounding. If you want a bruising, tough-nosed power forward, why would you want a soft, poor rebounding, highlight show type of guy? I'll keep Drew's offense and rebounding anyday over Stro's defense.

I suppose it's true that he's a poor rebounder. But positioning and boxing out can be taught. Playing next to Z would help.

Thing is, Gooden's offense is much less significant considering we have 1 LeBron, 2 Z, 3 Hughes, 4 PG. Meaning he would be the 5th option on offense despite his talent. Which is why I said that Stro is a better fit, not quite the better player.

I have no interest in Swift if I'm the Cavs. I think he's highly overrated. Just because he makes an occasional nice highlight reel play that gets on Sportscenter doesn't make him a great a player.
Like has been said Swift isn't smart player and has a low basketball IQ. He's also an average rebounder at best and doesn't possess great range on his shot.
I'd rather keep Gooden at PF than go after Swift.

I'm also not high on Reggie Evans--only if he came cheap and he'll probably get paid too much. Evans is a good rebounder but that's all he can do. He has no offensive game and has a shooting range of 3 feet. He's also an average defender at best and has no shotblocking ability. I think the main PF on the Cavs has to have some consistent mid range game since they'll be getting a lot of open looks from there.

Agree I think this board is really gone Gooden hating when folks think Stromile will be a better PF for the Cavs then Gooden. Gooden has definite issues but with most of those issues (IQ), Stro is far worse. In addition, Swift is a bit lazy and is a terrible rebounder for his size. Don't like the pickup

well Stro is a shot blocker than can definatly help defend the paint. if my memory serves me correct, we dont have a shot blocking threat on our team.

I think we all recognize Gooden's limitations, but I think a lot of people on this board jump too fast to the conclusion that everybody else is better--Haslem, Swift and Evans are the latest in a long line that dates back to the end of last season. I'd give Drew another year to prove himself. He's relatively inexpensive, he's a team player, he'll get some defensive coaching for a change, and Varejao will be pushing him for minutes. And he'll make half of his shots and four-fifths of his free throws. My guess is that we'll get good play at the power forward position this year. Ferry et al should be focusing on finding another point guard and a back-up center and leave well enough alone at power forward.

Your memory isn't serving you. We do happen to have a guy who is a top ten shot blocker in the NBA.

^ whos that? Ira? ...

I wouldnt mind seeing stro here, likesomone said above, drew is our 5th option on offense... we need ad efensive PF , and Drew is an offensive PF.. simple as that

Z is well capable of blocking shots in the paint. So there goes that shot blocking theory. Good catch Ben.

All this PF talk is getting me exhausted. There is really no good replacement avaliable really. aaronr is right, our best bet is to stick with Drew Gooden for one more year and see what he can do. At least we have AV still, so we really don't have to watch Drew Gooden for 40 minutes a game.

we won't get stromile, we will go after reggie evans maybe or just stay pat with gooden, stro is all but a rocket.

As mental as Drew is, who often rebounds simply by outjumping people, Swift is worse. Swift is not more cerebral or teachable than Drew. In each of those categories, he's worse. Stromile reminds me of Kwame Brown. For all their athleticism, they take far too many plays off and simply may never ever get it. If you want Swift to get offense off garbage and rebounding, well Gooden is the better rebounder and does a better job taking the garbage out.
