because we can absorb salary while Memphis couldn't. Memphis basically just cleared the way to not have to move Rudy Gay this year.

Couldn't the Grizzlies have dealt Ellington, Selby and the #1 for Leuer and then moved Speights to whatever team will ultimately deal with the Cavs? My purpose is to question the idea that Speights has trade value.

CG isn't going to settle for that. The guy abuses GM's in trades at least once a year. Fact is, our cap space puts us in a position of leverage when dealing with teams like MEM. CG knows how to use that leverage.

Speights was the one making the most money and had a player option for next year. Selby has a team option and Ellington is expiring. Getting rid of Speights, who is the only one the Grizzlies would have had to pay next year (assuming he took the option), was the most important part of the trade for Memphis.

no, the deal to move Spights now would take on salary, they needed to clear salary.

Given the financial commitment Speights represents and the fact that the trade is first and foremost about the pick, Grant very well may have preferred the scenario I outlined. How does the same deal without Speights mean "settling" for Grant.

Exactly - Speights doesn't have any trade value, so we're not gonna flip him for something useful.

Why would he prefer that deal? Speights represents a huge opp to garner another first rounder. He's going to get a shot at showcasing his game for a playoff team and his next contract on a team that can afford him such an opportunity.

What financial commitment does he represent exactly? He'll be off the books after this season regardless if he's traded or not.

the issue is Memphis, they wanted to get under the luxury tax, they had to clear speight's salary to do that. Now taht we have him, we can add salary to get something else in a trade that includes him. The team that we potentially make a deal with wouldn't be able to offer a deal for Speights that Memphis could take given their need to get under the luxury tax.

What? Have you watched him play? There is definitely value there. A skilled big with a good body is attractive to many teams in the playoff hunt right now.

He does have trade value, the teams he has value to are over the cap, so have to send salary back to take him. Memphis couldn't make a trade like that and get under the luxury tax.

GM to Memphis. We want to trade you player X who is under contract until 2014 for Speights.
Memphis GM: No thanks

GM to Grant: We want to trade you player X who is under contract until 2014 for Speights.
Grant: That trade will cost us money, you'll have to include your 2014 pick.

Perhaps the teams who value Speights couldn't take him on in a trade w/o sending salary back, and Memphis didn't want that. Now, with him on a team that can absorb salary back, it opens doors.

I don't think people realize how important draft picks will be in the future, especially with luxury tax ramifications, etc. These trades are big for the future of this franchise.....

Not only that, but will all of the Hollinger drones still sing his praises once it becomes clear he just signed off on the same trade Steve Kerr laments?

His analysis of last trade deadline was brutal to teams making motivated deals. Hash tag Irony.

^ First time I've seen "Hash Tag" written out.

Well done.
