I understand Hubie has always announced this way. I used to be fine with it in the past when I was rooting for a competitive game or for an underdog .

But now as someone who is heavily invested as a Cavs fan I really don't think I should have to put up with him groaning every time the Cavs do something good, saying "there you go " every time the Raptors make a play, and he mostly comments on officiating in ways that go against the Cavs while ignoring Raptor uncalled fouls.

Yes he gives occasional praise to Cavs players but almost grudgingly.

The talking points the PBP announcer was using were beyond worn out also.

I have come to expect and accept a national bias again LeBron and the Cavs because it's normal to have a backlash against dynasty players and teams. I fully understand my perspective as a full blown Cavs homer. At the same time I'm grateful just to get to experience being a fan of a successful team with a legendary player in his prime.

But is it just too much to ask wanting to be able to watch and listen to games without all the relentless bias even if it's somewhat subliminal and perhaps unintentional? Just be professional at the job of calling a game.

If he wasn't groaning after a Cavs made bucket, there was utter silence from him - after gushing about the bucket the Raptors just made on the other end not 15 seconds before.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Yes I know it's his schtick, it's not Anti cavs or whatever. But it doesn't make it any less unprofessional. I have no idea how a person keeps a job of that nature with that style.

I also am surprised at the number of Cavs fans, here and otherwise, that defend/excuse it. The way he color commentates a game, it is exactly how I'd picture a home Raptors crew doing it. Throwing in occasional praise for Korver or LeBron but otherwise.."groan".. "there you go"...

SO glad we get no more of him this season. Hopefully ever and he retires already.

If you guys wanna watch good Hubie..here you go.

92 ECF Game 2 vs the Bulls. Start at 3:50. Make sure you catch around the 9:15 mark when Daugherty picks up an offensive foul and Hubie is like exactly how he was with the Raptors getting a bad break lol. You even get an "Oh no that's not a good sign" when the Bulls get an early offesnive rebound lol. And at 15:30 Hubie cheers when Brad runs the floor lol. And at 19:00 watch Mark Price make a 3. So you have 4 clips from 3:50-5:00 and 9:15, 15:30, and 19:00 to watch Hubie at his cheerleading stages. It's sort of amazing how Hubie hasn't changed from 25+ years ago.

Hubie's thing is to approach the game as if he were coaching the underdog team and how he'd react to that stuff in game. He has a job, so there are clearly no higher-ups telling him not to do it.

As a Cavs fan, when watching the Cavs, it's definitely annoying and insufferable at times, but it's a unique mindset and it's definitely informational, ESPECIALLY to the 'casual fan'.

He calls games as if he's coaching that team. I'd be lying if I said I personally didn't enjoy it when watching two teams I'm not a fan of. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people feel that way.

EDIT: Watched a bit of the video above, and he's doing the same thing in favor of the Cavs as he discuses they way they're defending, their need to limit offensive rebounds, etc.

That's a good point with the edited comment...Love him or hate him, at least Hubie cares about the game and his coaching acumen is very present! He's one of the more well-known broadcasters out there. I remember him in the early '00s with the Grizzlies.

Good find with that old video. It is interesting to note he's done this forever. It's also interesting to note the mindset of a fan (me). I'm not to used to being a fan of a vast favorite in most games we play as a Cleveland fan. So clearly I don't notice it on the other side of things.

I still believe he could and should do his thing without the literal CHEERING and audible groans. I can't back off that opinion. And still hope he never announces one of our games again. But it does help to gain some perspective.

Hubie's from a rough background but he's got an interesting story. Fratello was his assistant!

Yeah he's got a big background with the Five Star camps. And Fratello came up through that system and coaching tree. I bet he was a huge fan of the underdog, gritty Cavs when Fratello became the Cavs coach. Despite some of the blatant cheerleading, I like how Hubie tends to focus a lot on fundamentals and coaching during the games. Not much BS in his actual analysis.

Check out the Deadspin article and the comments. :) The NBA has changed. And the late '70s were a waning time before the Lakers-Celtics...

That article was amazing. Also Wayne Embry's book was quite a great commentary as well as to how the NBA was throughout the 70s into the turn of the new century. And you can see so much Hubie in the way Mike Fratello coached and analyzes the game today. He was definitely "the czar" for a reason.

DeRozan has had a negative net rating each of the past three seasons, the largest contract on the team, needs the ball in his hands in order to be effective, is a mediocre passer, can't shoot threes, and is a terrible defender.

If the Raptors could rid themselves of his salary, I think it would be worth it, but I doubt that's possible. He's a fun offensive player to watch, and you have to put a good defender on him, but I think DDR being your best offensive player really caps how good the Raptors could become. If they could, say, get Paul George and re-sign Lowry and Ibaka, then I think DeRozan is a great piece to have. Unfortunately, I don't know that the combination of tradeable assets (see below) is enough to get a guy of PG13's caliber.

Raptors tradeable assets not counting DDR:
-Norm Powell
-Cory Joseph
-DeMarre Carroll
-Jonas V
-Bruno Cabocolo
-Delon Wright
-Jakob Poetl
-Lucas Nogeira
-Pascal Siakam
-Fred VanVleet
-Future draft picks

Frankly, I just don't see any combination of those being good enough to get a superstar. It puts Toronto in a tough position. Maybe they trade Joseph, Jonas, and Carroll to free up cap space and get another playmaker? Doing that would free up playing time for the young guys, too. It's just a tough situation.

Ultimately, I think their best bet is to trade DDR, Jonas, Joseph, and Carroll for whatever you can get, do not re-sign Lowry, Ibaka, and Tucker, and totally rebuild. But that would cost the franchise a ton of money, so I doubt it happens.
Package and trade some of these stiffs for Carmello, boom! Instant offense and credibility.

I love listening to Hubie. You will learn to love Hubie as well.

Derozan was awful in Game 2 but I thought he played well in Toronto. Part of the issue is the DeRozan got the ball to the right point on the perimeter (even in Game 2) but the Raptors outside of the second half of Game 4 just missed opens 3s or their release was too slow to take advantage of it. He's got an expesnive contract but I think his value is now being undersold

FWIW...I didn't expect him to be THAT bad.

I know he's "27". I thought he looked like 30-31 in his last run with OKC. After the Orls do experience and going to Tor...I think it's more like 34.

Lateral speed is gone. Quick jumping and re-jumping are gone. His hands are sketchy. He doesn't bang down low anymore. He can't guard on the perimeter anymore and also doesn't intimidate anyone at the rim. He's just fallen off so much. And most of this is what I took away from the series, only some of it I had thought before. Al they ever do is pick and pop him. He never rolls.to the basket...never rim runs...

He's just kinda of a big, semi athletic, plodding decent but not great shooting stretch big man.

He hardly ever rolled toward the end in OKC too. I have no idea why.

Anybody noticed the switching of the narratives lately?

Before the Playoffs when we looked vulnerable.. The East was stronger than in a long time.. all of Bos,Tor,Was could easilly upset us.. The Pacers could even win at least 2 Games..

A few weeks and 8-0 with us looking even better than our last years selfs at the same time.. suddenly the East is crap again.. Weaker than ever..

No matter what the Media and alot of people in general fight with all force against admitting we might look like a great Team.. like a Team that is equal to GSW.. a Team that can actually win the Title this year..

But go ahead..dear media.. dismiss the Cavs... again.. crown GSW early... again.. then Watch how GSW crumbles against us once we adapted to them(usually takes 1-2 Games)..again..
