Do Not Sell My Personal Information
One thing that has remained a constant for years is that the best teams have good kickers. Always. Every single year, all the best teams have good kickers. And those kickers win them multiple games every season. It's a major factor and I agree it is grossly overlooked. History tells us you basically are not a good team without a good kicker. Replace Vinatieri and Gostkowski with a replacement level kicker and the Patriots don't win half as many Super Bowls. It's a really important position.
Computers are wrong on kickers

The ravens are at LEAST 2 games better and we are probably 1-2 games worse than if we traded kickers. Tucker making 3.5 million is a fucking joke. Some team needs to pay him what he ACTUALLY deserves as a franchise changing player and that is 10M.

Are you really going to tell me Austin fucking Hooper is worth more than Tucker?

But as usual people would rather lose conventionally than be unconventional
I also wonder if conventional thinking has evolved with the 33-yard extra point. There are no gimme kicks anymore. The job is harder now.

So what is it like to kick at FirstEnergy stadium? I couldn't find historic totals for Browns/opponents so I made a table of the percentages by year back to 2003 (courtesy https://www.teamrankings.com). I'll let everyone else draw conclusions. Just thought it was interesting to see:

2020 87.50 78.57
2019 75.00 75.00

Yikes, what happened to Phil in 2006?

Thanks for pulling these numbers... I graphed them to highlight the obvious conclusion...

  • The red line is league-wide average FG% (all data, not just First Energy), which has been trending upwards from the high 70% to the mid 80%.
  • Since 2012, opposing kickers at First Energy have been right on the overall league-wide average with around 84% FG%... there his been no impact associated with First Energy on opposing kickers in recent years. This ignores average distance of attempt... which may be shorter at First Energy and also may be trending upwards league wide. If anyone can find that data, I'd be interested.
  • Dawson consistently kicked above league-wide average at First Energy, giving us an advantage. After his departure after 2012, we've been both worse compared to the league, and we've been getting worse at home....

TL-DR... the rest of the league isn't impacted when evaluated based on FG%... we're at a disadvantage because our kickers suck. We turned an advantage pre-2012 into a significant disadvantage post-2012. The league has progressed and we have regressed when it comes to FG% success both league-wide and at home.

We made 55% of our kicks in 2006? Seriously?
Out of Dawson’s 29 attempts that year, only 9 were at home and he missed four of them.

In my @aldamon induced kicker rabbit hole I didn’t take the next step of understanding the circumstances of those misses or why they attempted so few… but it was a disproportionately small sample for that season. He was 74% overall and 80% on the road for the year despite the home %.

If I’m Dieken or Donovan I’m just gonna call this guy Cris just to be safe…
