I had someone flip out on me on twitter for buying a Chief Wahoo hat at lids for my birthday.
I bought it because...I needed something to remind me of home (now that I'm a tulsa resident), I am a life long tribe fan so it brings out the warm and fuzzies, and because this will be the last time that I will ever see that particular hat being sold.
I don't "support" the concept of chief wahoo as a logo, but I also view at as being something with a cultural connection to cleveland for better or worse. I wlll in fact, proudly buy new Indians merch in the future.
I pretty much got slurred as a racist, hating native americans and told to never wear the hat in public.
This was not told to me by anyone with native american ancestry (which I do have). Just a white dude who wanted to feel less guilty about himself.
When I responded that I (as someone who is native american) was more offended at how the country actually handles educating people about first nations people? I had this handwaved away.
