Cavs Reach for Fourth Gear, Jazz Get There First
http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and...vs-reach-for-fourth-gear-jazz-get-there-first

"...this raises other rather salient questions, such as if they’re switching all the pick-and-rolls, and that’s causing issues, how come the team didn’t run some GD offense at that point? There was an awful lot of pick-and-roll offense that wasn’t producing points.

“We gave what we had. We just couldn’t make shots early,” Lue said. “We went 10 of 42 from 3 coming off a game where we shot almost 50% from three. So it was one of those games. I just thought we tried to compete. We tried to fight. We just didn’t have it.”

We don’t know which rubs us more the wrong way, the idea that it was “just one of those games,” or that Lue points to a game where they made a ridiculous percentage and number of threes, as if to say, “yeah, we didn’t make as many as the night before.” Is that really his expectation?

...That the Cavaliers were still in this game entering the fourth quarter is sort of the blessing and the curse of this team. They’re good enough that even on a night where shots aren’t falling and the other team’s giving them all they can handle, they’re just six to twelve minutes of solid play from a win.

The sooner they shed that crutch the better. But nobody becomes a better person overnight. All of life is about coming closer to who you want to be. Perfection’s a goal, not an expectation. Same thing with the Cavaliers.

The Eastern Conference is much tougher than in past years. There won’t be as many allowances for slippage or poor play as they’ve enjoyed during the regular season. We hope they’re not getting used to these “preseason” dispensations and excuses...."

Nice article, thought you saved your best for last:

What are you going to do? Inconsistency has been their calling card all year. They can blame the regular season doldrums and what really are you complaining about – they’re in first place. It’s like explaining to a student that getting an A isn’t as useful as learning something.

For me, very predictable loss. It's a back to back, after a nationally televised game where they didn't miss. They were alllll jacked up for that game, pretty obvious.

Utah, historically, has never, ever been an easy place to win. And yes, Utah, as mentioned always plays great defense.

I don't think it's being "tired" per se, more like emotionally flat. Under the circumstances, just the focus needed to pull this off was a lot to ask. Do we forget they are playing actual NBA professional teams, who are looking to beat the mighty Cavs - especially at home?

We call it inconsistent, but is 47-19 really inconsistent?

In the playoffs, there are no back to backs. They can rest and prepare for every game - and that is where this team has shined all season. And motivation is never an issue in the playoffs.

Another schedule loss.

One of the issues I have with the Cavs against Utah is they don't force the pace more..Utah has a unit of scrubs..and is a scrappy team..and the Cavs don't really attack them like they should.
Push the ball and force them to rotate and cover.
But they let them take control in the 3rd and 4th quarters when they should have been taking it right to them.

Another episode of "As the Regular Season Turns"

The Raptors REST DeRozan last night. And this the team TRailing in the so-called raced for #1 seed.

LOL!!

A game where you shoot almost 50% from the three is "one of those games" too. You have to throw that one out the window as well if you're looking at where this team really is.

That's a lot of excuses for a #1 seed to lose to a sub-500 team missing its best player also on a back-to-back.

Wonder what excuses they'll dredge up in the playoffs.

We already have the playoff excuse locked and loaded, remember? We don't have a team enforcer! Perkin's 1.3 points per game, .9 rebounds per game, and .5 turnovers per game in last year's playoffs is what separates us from being a legitimate contender...

Cavaliers’ Coaster Ride Finishes Ahead of Magic
http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and...avaliers-coaster-ride-finishes-ahead-of-magic

"When you’re a child, drama real and imaginary lurks behind every newfound corner. From the muddy creek behind apartment complex where Jedi battles raged to the scruffy bum who emerges now-sober from the bushes as playing kids yell laugh and point.

Life with the Cavaliers is similar, whether it’s the blend of real and imaginary drama, would-be Jedi locker room standoffs or simply the critical outrage and finger-pointing.

You could put the season on at 1:30 in the afternoon, call it As the Cavs Turn, and you’d have enough ups and downs to sustain a soap opera for years. From backsliding players to feuding stars, fired coaches and an underachieving team with the best record in the Eastern Conference, it’d be perfect for television. The entire year’s been a tempest in a snow globe, its beauty traumatized by the perpetual close-up.

We’re unsure if LeBron James is truly pissed at Kyrie Irving for the one assist he got against the Grizzlies when LeBron sat out, but we’re positive the media criticism is excessive. Though the article was expressed as “players” were upset with Irving’s play, we’ve been told the story came from LeBron’s camp.

Which is sort of funny since Irving passes more off his drives than James (more on that later) and his defense has picked up steadily since Lue’s ascension. Between Buddhist-Aggressive tweets and handing the pot stirrer to the media, it’s like LeBron’s gone Great Santini of late.

But honestly, as we said a couple weeks ago the Kobe/Shaq power struggle made for great newspaper copy but didn’t stop them from winning....

If you’ve watched the Cavs at all you know blowing leads and coming back in the fourth is how they like to live. It’s exasperating, especially when you witness eight minutes of perfect ball at the end of the second only to watch them deliver a hometown steamer in the third.

Yet if you get caught up in the repeated storylines you might miss a couple of salient facts. The offense is getting much better, even approaching Golden State levels when the passing is strong. Chemistry is beginning to develop between certain squads, almost in spite of Coach Lue’s frequently morphing rotations.

The ball movement is getting more consistent, and we’re seeing more effective cutting and PnR plays.

We even saw the Cavs abandon the three and get downhill in the second half after going 0-5 from distance in the third. They did make 19 turnovers as ballhandling has slipped of late. Still they improved to 29-2 when they have at least 23 assists.

We just hope they can tighten up their handle and bear down to play some defense."

My Favorite line: We think Shawn Marion has more chance of getting into a playoff game (than Mo).

Another line: We just hope they can tighten up their handle and bear down to play some defense.

Defense = effort. Effort = playoffs.

If only we could hurry it along. :celb (2):

Cavaliers Can’t Handle the Heat, Leave a Puddle
http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and...cavaliers-cant-handle-the-heat-leave-a-puddle

"Even Fox Mulder doesn’t want to believe as much as we do. Frankly, Heaven’s Gate gave their followers more to go on than the Cavaliers. We’re not advocating a diet of sedatives and vodka, though it might’ve preferable to watching the first three quarters of last night’s 122-101 bloodletting in Miami.

Though the Cavaliers were competitive in spurts, they weren’t nearly enough to counteract those moments when they morphed back into extras from The Walking Dead. Honestly, Comcast Cable has quicker response times. All night the Heat weaved around Wine and Gold defenders as if on skates, casually plunging daggers into the heart and cranium, then pirouetting over the crumbling corpse.

Perhaps those not yet inure to the Cavaliers peculiar form of Rickrolling, still screamed at the screen. Those of us who’ve endured a season of bafflingly inconsistent effort shrugged our shoulders, shook our heads and muttered, “I told you not to go into that room. See what you got yourself into?”

As usual, a great article. Love the old school Epstein reference....My only question is whether Delonte would be the one to forge the note from LeBron's mom...hey now!

But I do take issue with one thing you wrote:

There’s no denying that Lue’s helped make the offense more efficient, and the success of the small ball lineups with Love or Frye at center has been intriguing. But the defense has regressed, and nobody wants to talk about it, all we hear is some blather about pace.

On the contrary, didn't one of the members of our coaching staff recently say that "our offense is our defense?"

So there you are.

Hornets just came back and beat the Spurs tonight.

Guess the Spurs are inconsistent, unmotivated and not champions.

Uhh, yeah.
