Cleveland Development Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I forgot about cross country. Everything else makes sense. But what about the various business closing during covid? Not to mention some of the flats & warehouse district seemed to be a revolving door even before covid. I hope we find a way to build downtown in a sustainable way. I love the flats but almost wish Eaton was down there. Same with Progressive. Cleveland should be bending over backwards to keep or bring large companies downtown.
Oh Cleveland Cliffs has joined the Fortune 500 ranks again because some pretty big acquisitions and now they are looking to expand/build their own HQ.

That would be great but Cleveland Cliffs is carrying some heavy debt already.
There’s been some rumors that they are in fact looking for new space/building. It’s not going to be right away.

They already have a large building downtown. I’m pretty sure they rent part of the building out to other companies at the moment though. They’ll probably end that soon now that they’ve expanded. I doubt they look to move to another building.

They are in 200 Public Square. They do not own the building and are running out of space of the floors they are leasing.

their biggest steel plant is in burns harbor Indiana. That’s where arcelormittal had their US HQ. I would think they’d just continue to use that instead of moving everything over here. But it would be nice if they did.

Cliffs is the one that acquired that company. I’m telling you that they are indeed moving jobs here. They also acquired AK Steel of Cincinnati. They made two major moves and are now running out of room.

I work for them I’m aware of who owns who. So they’re gonna move all the Indiana corporate jobs over here? Im all for it I just don’t understand why they would when they have a huge hq over there already. We have plenty of empty buildings downtown they could have their choice of just about anything.

Some good info in this article. I could see them spreading out rather than having one big building.

I follow the blog. Why wouldn’t they consolidate their work force? Wouldn’t they want everyone collaborating under one roof? That article even mentions they’ll probably want a new tower.

And the building Ellipse suggested in that article has been bought by a Dallas company. They are turning those into apartments with co working space. So that one is off the table. I’m sure they’ll want Class A offices.

Looks pretty cool! Not sure about that toilet bowl looking thing but the rest of it looks great!

The initial plans look interesting. Beyond the proposed development, there is the 50,000 sq/ft expansion that is planned for the Rock-N-Roll HOF. Construction is scheduled (or was before COVID-19) to start in early 2022. It would be nice to see the Rock Hall and Science Museum more accessible from downtown. The proposed land bridge–which I dig–would contribute to that significantly to that.

Additionally, the Metropark is proposing creating a 80 acre park east of Burke Lakefront airport.

If and when these projects come to fruition, they could really transform the lakefront. I wouldn't mind seeing the stadium moved at some point, not sure where through.

Don't know how many people were aware of the previous nuCLEus proposal, but that appears to be dead and now replaced by a sports partnership plan. Would love to see this come to fruition, add a small tower and draw people in to a baseball village type area.

Would love to see these both happen. Nucleus looked cool initially but as it dragged on, I lost hope.

I read recently, that they're shuttering that big building in Mayfield Village because of transition to mostly remote work thereabouts. Huge blow to that town and the taxes they collect I'm sure. Nostalgically, I worked there for a few days not long after I moved to the area, and thought I was literally on Cybertron when I went through that building with all the badge entry and whatnot.

There was just something so very optimistic about being a Cleveland Rookie in my baby adult years.

So, with start of new year, here is a list of development projects in downtown Cleveland in 2024:

Curious to see how the east bank of Cuyahoga turns out, and Scranton Peninsula, too. Expansion of R&R Hall of Fame will be a good architectural addition. What will be done with redevelopment of the Justice Center site remains up in the air.

While it is good more apartments are being built (or being converted over to from unused office space), downtown still needs a lot more office jobs. While 1000 sq/ft of residential apartment might house 2 people, that same space in office might hold 17-26 workers or so. Smaller businesses will need that population density if to remain viable.
