Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Francona held a media session today, with a few notable comments:

- Nick Goody will be ready to go when camp starts
- Danny Salazar, not so much. Tito: "Danny's not going to be on pace where ... we know when he comes to spring training, he's not going to be competing to make our club."
- And Tito on where the Indians stand: "We've got some work to do before spring training. The guys (Chris Antonetti and Mike Chernoff) are busy and I'm pretty certain we're going to break camp with 25 guys. We do it every year and we'll figure out a way to do it again this year. And we'll feel good about ourselves."

Pretty disheartening to hear him ruling out Salazar already. The Indians have to believe that he'll either contribute at some point or can be used as a trade chip, though, or else they would have certainly saved $ by dumping him.

We don't even truly know what is wrong with Salazar either honestly. I haven't seen anything anywhere that really gave a true definition on what he is dealing with.

Gomes is on the wrong side of 30 and was due raises each of the next 2 seasons.

Trading him was a smart use of relieving some $.

True, but I don’t think he was in decline or will be in the next 2 seasons.

Gomes work behind the plate and with the pitching staff and his confidence at the plate and ability to hit the ball to both left and right all gone. Perez couldn’t do a damn thing right last year and he’s good to get hurt at some point. Rolling with Haase is a huge risk for a team expected to contend. We have enough question marks in the bullpen and outfield already, and now at catcher. I guess I just think Gomes was underrated and is a huge loss, and Perez is overrated (if that’s even possible).

Hmm, interesting

Thank you for this thread.

In a clutch situation I prefer Perez. Gomes can try to do too much and get impatient. I feel like Perez needs to start Game 1 against Sale.

I do think they'll continue to split time about 60/40 like you said in the playoffs. Perez guaranteed to start when Bauer starts.

Uribe I'm not worried about. Ramirez can play third when Brantley comes back. Can't have Gomes anymore. We have to do something about him, and our bullpen, and then I'll be very confident. We are not desperate for a bat; we are desperate for for relief pitchers. Obviously.

Soooo interesting

Contrary to popular belief, you can reply to someone's post without calling that person dumb.

There's no place for it.
Hmm interesting...Soooo interesting...

Agreed tho...

We are six weeks away from Spring Training and over 200 free agents remain unsigned.

Closer market seems to be setting itself while the OF market has kind of started. I am though surprised from the wait of Harper and Machado to sign. Maybe like last season teams are being more frugal? Hopefully this market plays into the Indians favor at the end of the day.

Roberto Perez also never got consistent at bats at the end of the day. He slumped from the get go and never got at bats, so I didn’t expect his batting average and whatnot to improve.

We wouldn’t have traded Gomes unless there was faith in Haase to replace him in handling the staff and getting some production. I am not worried about it honestly. We will bring in a couple veterans as well to compete with Haase to make the roster.

What does the farm look like now for catchers though? I am thinking guys like Salters and Ice may be at AA next season, but I am not sure if they have MLB potential or not. My guess is we will have two veteran catchers at AAA?
