Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The Fox Sports Ohio contract ends in 2023. The same year Lindor is a free agent. The money will be there if they want to spend it.
Fans may not go to the games, but they damn sure have been watching on TV. Should be some big money coming in that year.

Lindor will be a free agent at the end of the 2021 season.

This has been a super quiet off season since the winter meetings honestly. The top players haven't signed and there is still a lot of good talent out there! I see some guys signing minor league deals so I expect some here soon!

Jeff Sullivan of Fangraphs mentioned yesterday in a chat the average team outfield WAR right now is 7.3. The Indians are currently projected at 3.5 for the entire outfield this season with only the Giants ranking worse.

Let's take stock of the non-Harper/Machado free agent hitters market.

Marwin Gonzalez - Originally expected to get a long-term deal, he may be best suited to take a 1 year contract and re-enter the market next year. The Indians could offer a starting position and being on a contender, but so could other teams, including the Astros.

Mike Moustakas - This would require Kipnis or Bauers moving to the outfield, but Moose would add some power to a lineup that could really use it, and could probably be had on a one year deal.

Adam Jones - Still a solid player that had an excellent 2nd half. A starting position + a chance to win should be intriguing to him on a one year deal.

Derek Dietrich - Can play all over the field (although not well) and has an underrated bat. He's also a Cleveland native. I can't imagine he'd require more than a small one year deal.

Logan Morrison - Hit 38 HRs in 2017 for the Rays before having a miserable 2018 with the Twins. Could be interesting on a minor league deal.

Josh Harrison - Decent player that can play all over the field. An all-star in both 2014 and 2017. Probably a replacement-level guy at this point, but his versatility would make him a Tito favorite.

Yangervis Solarte - Had some nice years in San Diego but really struggled with Toronto last year. Would expect him to have to take a minor league deal.

Melky Cabrera - Pretty solid at the plate once he settled in after not having a Spring Training. Not great in the field, but passable.

Carlos Gonzalez - Has spent most of his career in Colorado, where he was an all-star in 2016. His best years are behind him, but he'd be a solid veteran to add.

Brandon Guyer - Historically mashes lefties, but durability is a big concern. Seems like the team has moved on from him.

Denard Span - Pretty underrated IMO. Put .261/.341/.419 in 2018 with solid defense. Likely dirt cheap - he could help.

I would be okay with only Marwin, but if I could get Harrison and Span as well, that would be a perfect off season.

I love Marwin and would be fine with him at 3b ... Harrison or preferably Moustakas even ...

I understand the outfield sight unseen concern but if we get two or three more as suggested by you or others ... Who goes away?

I actually think Allen, Zimmer, Luplow, Naquin, Mercado all have a minor league options left, so no need to worry about losing them if a veteran wins the job. The first cuts will likely be one of the pitchers, aka a Taylor, Cole etc, then maybe a Moroff/Stamets after that. I am not worried about the end of the bench since we have a bunch of equal ability guys that way, we just lack in a sense proven 1st string guys. Also I think pitchers Karinchak, Sandlin, Civale, Kaminsky, Chiang, Hill, Hoyt could also make this roster sometime this season in the bullpen if they are pitching well and injuries/guys are struggling. Taylor, Cole etc should make it through waivers and could stay here in the organization so we really don't lose anything that way by outrighting those guys more than likely.

My guess is at the moment, We will keep Luplow, Naquin, Martin and Allen out of camp with Bauers playing some in the OF. Luplow in LF, Martin in CF, Allen in RF and Naquin as the 4th. That though still leaves us weaker to lefties since we cannot avoid the fact Naquin and Martin haven't been proven to hit lefties in their careers. So my guess is a RH like Jones actually is a better fit overall as an OF, but Span is way more proven than Naquin as well. That's my personal evaluation.

This time of the year, the end of the roster gets shuffled a lot, so its actually on the surprising side it hasn't been a lot more than it had this season. We really won't lose anybody by getting the veterans honestly since we will just end up cutting the guys on the roster bubble anyways. The only guy that's someone we could lose is Plutko, who will likely be not much more than a 5th roster, long man in MLB.

FO did everything it was asked and more during that run, which is over now. This isn’t on them at all.

It appeared that they had fielded a team with more than enough talent to contend during Lindor and Ramirez’s contracts, with a historically good pitching staff. Lineup top to bottom let them down in the playoffs, with the exception of Lindor, with unbelievably futile playoff performances in consecutive years. Kluber and Bauer were also disappointing this past year as well against the Astros who the AL will go through for the next 5 yrs minimum.

All of this coincided with Astros and Yankees teams on the rise that have double the talent the Indians do. Hilariously, the Yankees built a fair amount of their talent through their farm system for once.

Two years ago this team seemed unstoppable.

I honestly believe we are spending money we do not need to spend if we sign two outfielders especially if Tito is sending Kipnis to outfield ...

The bullpen and 3b are bigger concerns

You as I are Luplow supporters .. the remaining outfielders played a ton on a winning team

Lets fill the holes we need to fill at 3 and RP

Right now I'd project the lineup as this:

1-SS-Francisco Lindor
2-2B-Jason Kipnis
3-3B-Jose Ramirez
4-DH-Carlos Santana
5-1B-Jake Bauers
6-LF-Greg Allen
7-RF-Tyler Naquin/Jordan Luplow
8-CF-Leonys Martin
9-C-Roberto Perez

This means your counting on:

- Kipnis in the #2 spot
- Leonys Martin to bounce back 100%
- Naquin to stay healthy and produce
- Luplow to produce at the ML level
- Allen to be an everyday OF over the course of an entire season

That's too many "if's" to me.

Now let's say you sign Adam Jones:

1-SS-Francisco Lindor
2-LF-Adam Jones
3-3B-Jose Ramirez
4-DH-Carlos Santana
5-1B-Jake Bauers
6-2B-Jason Kipnis
7-RF-Tyler Naquin/Jordan Luplow/Greg Allen
8-CF-Leonys Martin
9-C-Roberto Perez

You've extended your lineup a bit, protected Lindor a bit more, pushed Kipnis to a less important spot in the order, and aren't as reliant on the young/unproven guys to step up in a big way.
