Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not sure Span really that guy though.

Last year he was really good against LHP, but that seems to be more of a one-year fluke than who he really is. He's had several really awful seasons against LHP in the past and his career numbers v. LHP are well below average.

He's almost certainly a better stick overall than Naquin, but I just don't know if he really helps the LHP problem. All signs point to this past year being an aberration.

In the broad sense, sure, he isn't good against LHP...mostly because what little he slugs vs righties goes away vs lefties. But I still like his career marks for BA and OBP vs LHP. .260/.340 for his career is definitely appealing to a team currently trotting out Jordan Luplow as it's only platoon bat vs LHP.

For a guy who you know will be a soft hitter at the end of your order, Span at least provides a potentially solid non-platoon option. Age scares the shit out of me though.

A career slash line of .296/.376/.519 against lefties.

@CBBI as well

He could make the team, then this puts Bauers splitting time between LF, RF and 1st. Then Luplow becomes the 4th OF and plays against Lefties keeping Bauers/Martin out of the lineup against them normally? I mean he is limited to 1st or DH anymore, but batting wise, still could be a threat when healthy! I still think Allen plays everyday but could be a good addition to the ball club batting wise.

He's been absolutely terrible three out of the last four years, but it can't hurt to try and catch lightning in a bottle.

Even his splits vs lefties have dipped since he went to Boston.

Outside of his 2016 renaissance, his numbers against lefties were a .710 OPS and an 83 wRC+ in 2015, and a .679 OPS with a 64 wRC+ in 2017.

I like the gamble, but expectations need to be low.

This honestly is a no risk signing since a healthy Ramirez can hit 20+ HRs. We needed to bring in a RH bat so in a sense this is a good signing. Don't expect much, but he needs to play well this year or he is done playing baseball.

Im waiting for the Tribe to shock the world and sign Harper.

Best guess with Lindor healthy?

VS RHP

SS-S-Lindor
2B-L-Kipnis
3B-S-Ramirez
DH-S-Santana
1B-L-Bauers
RF-L-Naquin
C-R-Perez
CF-L-Martin
LF-S-Allen

VS LHP

SS-S-Lindor
2B-L-Kipnis
3B-S-Ramirez
1B-S-Santana
DH-R-Ramirez
LF-R-Luplow
RF-L-Naquin
C-R-Perez
CF-S-Allen

I don't mind them bringing in anyone as a minor league invite.

That said, not sure exactly how he fits into the team if Santana and Bauers are healthy. I'm skeptical if they'll use a roster spot on a part time player that is limited in where he can play defensively- at this point he should primarily be a DH with the occasional start at 1B.

The scenario would be Santana or Bauers in the OF

So:

vs. RHP
OF Bauers
OF Martin
OF Joyce
DH Hanley
1B Santana

~50/50 split with with lineup and one with Bauers at DH and Allen at OF?

vs. LHP
OF Allen
OF Martin
OF Luplow
DH Hanley
1B Santana

I could get on board with that, if Hanley can be productive. I would like to see Allen still getting semi-regular playing time.

Personally I don't think both Joyce and Hanley make the team.
