We aren’t signing a catcher to a major league deal. Now we are going to bring in a veteran like a Butera or someone with some big league experience into camp to compete for a spot, but we aren’t spending the money to replace Gomes that it would cost via free agency. If anything we are going to put the funds into the bullpen, Marwin etc

Though side note wasn’t Neil Ramirez a non-tender candidate? I haven’t heard anything on him yet

Wow why couldn’t we just quit on Salazar and pay Gomes. We are a much worse baseball team after this trade. We know Salazar won’t stay healthy, and we know it’s a circus every time he takes the mound.

I don’t think many people were hating on Gomes last year. He really turned it around and had a great year. Battled some injuries and had confidence issues the couple years before. Not trying to make excuses for him, but he’s waaaaay better than Perez. Perez can’t do shit. Half the time can’t even cleanly attempt a throw to second. Slow. We all know he’s worthless at the plate. Gomes was like the only guy putting up good at-bats for us in the ALDS.

People forget Michael Brantley was a PTBNL... never know.

I'm sorry but all the Francisco Mejia takes today are really really lazy and completely irrelevant.

Gomes is a catcher. The Indians felt Mejia was not.

Yan Gomes and Kipnis are replaceable players with contracts that are not needed.

I like Roberto behind the plate. And think Haas will be the right backup.

Next is to get rid of the Kipnis contract.

Then they have significant money to invest without dealing one of the starters. Also lock up Cookie to an extension.

Absolutely. Gomes did have a better season last year, but his bat was wildly inconsistent over the past few years due to injuries. He’s on the wrong side of 30, and has a higher salary.
If they can get anything for Kipnis, I’d be ecstatic.

Most confounding thing about trading Gomes, for me, is not that we traded him but that we traded him for guys that are unlikely to contribute in the near term.

Seems like a weird time to stock non MLB ready prospects, given our other moves over the past 12 months.

I guess I’m more interested in our organizational mindset than I am getting caught up with trading someone like Gomes.

I'd be willing to guess the Indians don't see it that way. I've already heard talk of Rodriguez possibly being converted to a late-inning reliever. If they keep him as a SP, I'd guess he gets the #5 spot ahead of Plutko.

As for Johnson, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get a shot in the OF at some point in 2019.

They got a bullpen arm. Which they need.

Johnson could be a mid year candidate and insurance for Zimmer, Luplow don’t pan out

Klay Thompson’s brother.
