Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Paul Hoynes says he would trade Bieber, and Tristan for Haniger. He would also trade Bauer to Philly for Efflin, Medina and Romero.

GM for the day Paul Hoynes:

Trades Bauer to Philly for RHP Zach Eflin, LHP JoJo Romero and RHP Adonis Medina

Trades McKenzie and Bieber to Seattle for RF Mitch Haniger

Trades Yandy Diaz to Tampa Bay for RP-Diego Castilla

He then re-sign's Cody Allen for $8M per.

I don't think ANY of those pitchers acquired from Philly are better than Bauer, Bieber or McKenzie. The Indians have turned down plenty of opportunities to move Bieber so I'm not sure why they'd consider it now PLUS throw in their top overall prospect for a non-superstar.

FWIW, a lot of the projection models LOVE Bieber.... like All Star caliber pitcher next season.

Haniger is a star however. But I don't see them giving up 3 great pitchers.

Ehh I don't dislike Mitch Haniger-- I think he'd be a great pickup for the Tribe for the right price-- but he's only had 1.5 years of good production and he's about to be 28. He doesn't really have the track record to be considered a star yet.

My point is that, if Hoynes is packaging McKenzie and Bieber, I would probably set my sights higher than Mitch Haniger.

Anyone have the Buster Oney article from today after the carasco extension?

Well the winter meetings start today and the FO will be busy. I am expecting a trade or two this week. They will need to be creative to make this team be able to win it all this season. We all seem to agree on the Indians need to make some moves to make the team better, but we will never agree on the way we would do it.

Also a lot of Hoynes trades I do not agree with, but the Bauer trade may not be as bad as people think. I mean you get a MLB ready pitcher and two of their top 10 prospects, so it's not horrible in that sense, but I don't know if I wouldn't want one of their young OFs mixed in instead.

Now I would not do the McKenzie and Bieber for Haniger, that would be too much of a mistake. I think just one of those guys plus a mid level prospect or two could maybe get the deal done. I doubt we would ever trade those two guys for one player honestly.

Why wouldn't he find a way to move EE or Kipnis though? Just those moves alone don't really help this team since you are gambling on unknowns to fill in spots in the rotation and hoping a Haniger can repeat his first full season.

Kipnis is likely untradeable with his contract. I really hope to be wrong but at his salary....
I don’t know if I’d move EE just for the sake of moving him. I suspect his 2019 numbers will be in the same ballpark as 2018. He should hit his 30 bombs, drive in some runs and hopefully have a hot month or two where he’s hitting over .250. Yes his April and May will likely be brutal.
The most likely bet is the Dodgers signing Harper or another stud OF then looking to pick up a Tribe pitcher as people state above. I’d like Bellinger.

From Ken Rosenthal

*A rival executive in contact with the Indians says the team is open to both straight trades of Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer as well as those in which they would attach the contract of a highly paid position player to one of the pitchers.

Jason Kipnis and Edwin Encarnación – owed $17 million and $25 million respectively, including buyouts – would be leading candidates to move in the latter scenario. Such a trade would save money, an important consideration for the Indians. But it also would lessen the return significantly.

Kipnis, who turns 32 on April 3, is coming off a .704 OPS, his lowest since 2014, and some teams question whether he would accept a secondary role. Encarnacion, who turns 36 on Jan. 7, is coming off an .810 OPS, his lowest since ‘11.
