This^. There are a ton of good players, especially PGs and combo guards, who were total dogshit in their first season.

I did not follow the draft all that much. After we drafted Sexton I watched a few of his games and studied his stats. I was not a huge fan...

But he has shown promise in the NBA. Is he frustrating to watch? Yeah, sometimes. Is his vision bad? Some of the worst I've seen. Is he defense leaving a lot to be desired? Yeah, but it is not because of lacking effort.

Nonetheless, give the guy a break. He's scoring at a PRO level and, once he stops shooting so many midrange shots, his efficiency will skyrocket too.
Maybe once he has a few shooters on the team his assists will go up . The kid was the 8th pick. He has areas to work on but I believe his work ethic will make him a stud at 22

What's his assist opprotuniy percentage or whatever look like?

I know what you're getting at with Sexton's age. But Delly is playing with the same crappy shooters and finishers and is averaging 11.4 assists per 100 possessions with a 37.6% assist rate.

Sexton is averaging 4.2 assists per 100 possessions with a 13.6% assist rate.

Is the roster bad? Of course. Is Sexton young enough to the point where he'll likely see improvements a lot in areas? Certainly.

But the very real possibility exists that he's just doesn't even have average (much less good or great) vision or feel as a passer and it isn't really going to improve by leaps and bounds either given how jarringly poor it is right now.

All possibilities exist this early in the development stage. Sexton came out of a program that didn't surround him with an optimum surrounding cast or system for becoming proficient at assisting other baskets, instead he was more of a go-to guy. Now he's thrown off into the deep end of the NBA and he's had to play with a roster that changes daily, with totally undefined roles across the board.

NOT exactly the best place for a rookie who's never had to be much of an assist guy to figure out how to become one. This is going to take some time and IMO people sharing your opinion regarding Sexton are lacking in patience. Sexton is still very much trying to figure out his role and for now he is as bad as he'll ever be. He hasn't figured out when to attack and when to pass, and most of his passes are just on the perimeter to keep the ball moving. Frankly this whole squad really sucks at passing and our half court offense is non-existent if you were to take away one-on-one guys like Hood and Clarkson.

Delly has been here for a very short while. Everyone hopes Delly will rub off on Sexton but this is going to take more than a few weeks to come about.

You make a great point. In all likelihood this is the very worst version of Sexton we are ever going to see. Just because he had a good stretch of games, people thought he would just continue to get obviously better ever single game. He's improved a lot already, but he needs to grow a whole lot more.

Sexton is going to have to take some lumps to realize he can't win the game by himself. He is overconfident and tries to be the hero. Last night was a good learning opportunity. He was moving the ball, everyone was, and they were beating that team. Once he and everyone else went Iso in the 2nd half, they couldn't buy a basket.

He has confidence in his ability to drive and convert in traffic, a confidence earned by success in the past.. But in the NBA people will watch the film and gameplan to jam him up inside, and he wont recognize that initially.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the NBA game schedule is more taxing than college. As the season wears him down he will have bad days.

Personally, I think he is better than expected so far. I think will end up as an above average defender for a point guard, and a starting level point guard.. he wont see 8 assists per game, but I think 4 is a fair target, and I think in full flower he can average 20 points a game with an occasional 40 point game.

So from.that perspective I am pretty happy with our eighth overall pick ..compare him to say Dujaun Wagner who was a 6th overall pick and tell me we did not do better...

Dujaun had health issues you really wouldn't want to wish on anyone. You can also say that Sexton is better that Luke Jackson, 10th pick. Once again, health issues. He's still got a way to go to catch up to 8th pick Andre Miller though.

Luke Jackson.... that whole thing just reminds me of how truly shitty that Paxson era was.

Andre Miller. Man, now that's one of my favorite Cavs. and he had a long career in the NBA.

You forgot Diop

delly is going to rub off on sexton a little bit but you cant teach someone how to be delly

You and I were both here in that Era... yes Dujaun had health issues.. my point is that 8th pick is a dice roll. Vectors to success are work ethic, durability and a drive to be the best. I am seeing this in the young bull. He has played a lot of minutes as a 19 year old, no injury, and that is a guy who drives into traffic. Kyrie by comparison is made of glass..

And I guess my other point is that if you are going to criticize everything and everyone. You will struggle as a Cav fan in the post lebron era.. it's going to take a few shitty seasons to rebuild. When we find value in the mud, you celebrate it, and when you win on grit, you celebrate it. Remember the days of Ricky Davis and the hopelessness of Stepien.. I think we are markedly better as an organization from those days...

You forgot Diop

I thought about Diop. Raw as hell, physically gifted, and was lazy as shit until his rookie contract ended. Total garbage with the Cavs. I was sitting at the next table over at a restaurant when he was meeting with people from Dallas with his agent. Ended up being a decent role player for a couple years. So its easy to say that Sexton is already better than Diop's time in Cleveland, but he's got a way to go to catch up to where Diop was in Dallas. He's got a way to go on the fake fan video front too... (Cuban paid for the video)
