Typical Sexton loves the underdog role statement. At some point determination/effort aren’t enough and you have to have talent to be a difference maker. Not sure Collin has enough of the latter.
I think when you have enough athleticism, determination/effort will take you a long way. Most people lack the athleticism and/or smarts. By all accounts to Sexton isn't braindead either. I can't see him developing into an all-star PG. Maybe someone like a Lou Williams or if he played with a bigger PG like Luka, could see him start at SG and guard PGs.

He has improved tremendously this year. Much better at finishing, improved shot selection, and the recognition that slowing things down is sometimes the best move.
We're not really going to know where his ceiling is until he stops improving.

That may take awhile.

I just don't understand on the breakaway why he looked scared to dunk.....dude won the McDonalds high school dunk contest against.....de he forget how to jump or is he just thinking way too much? I'll be honest I've tried to avoid Cavs games this year...I'm in NC and I'm not buying league pass.

I know we lack high-end talent, but if the team lacked talent but hustle, play D, and act as they care I'm ok with the product. We need better coaching.

You know you can watch all the games for free if you search "Nba reddit stream" on google and pick the first link, right?

for a somewhat undersized 19 year old rookie he's a good shooter and scorer, plenty of potential at that end. Not sure how much floor general I am seeing in him though, even as he improves. Bad team environment could be related to that.

He has improved a great deal, I'll give him that. Having Love back has helped him more than anybody.

Tough kid, I'm glad to see him work so hard. Very anxious to see who our next coach is because we need someone who truly can develop young talent because we have some nice young pieces moving forward.

Just going to say looks like Sexton loves the 2 man game with a big and Love is perfect for him. I also noticed he does well playing as the secondary ball handler, he doesn't loose focus often like allot of young pg's being asked to play off the ball.

In this day and age a PG doesnt need 8+ apg to be conducive to winning. If you look at the last 20 champs, I'd bet Rondo & Curry are the only PGs to average 6+ apg on a championship winning team in the finals.

I think its more important to have multiple playmakers who can get theirs in today's NBA. Ante, Kevin and Cedi are all above average passers.

Just need Collin to average 5+ in the season and continue to score.

Not sure if you meant APG in the actual NBA Finals series or not, so I went with the entire postseason of play for a player who's team won the Finals that year because separating for just one series is prone to too much flukeness and is a pain in the ass:

- Draymond Green, Golden State, 2018: 8.1 APG
- Stephen Curry, Golden State, 2017: 6.7 APG
- Draymond Green, Golden State, 2017: 6.5 APG
- LeBron James, Cleveland, 2016: 7.6 APG (8.9 APG in the Finals)
- Stephen Curry, Golden State, 2015: 6.4 APG
- LeBron James, Miami Heat, 2013: 6.6 APG
- Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks, 2011: 7.3 APG
- Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics, 2008: 6.6 APG
- Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers, 2001: 6.1 APG
- Avery Johnson, San Antonio Spurs, 1999: 7.4 APG

So yeah, not a huge list here. I will say that the Spurs winning so much kind of skewed things a bit, since most of those teams had multiple guys averaging 4+ APG because of that league-best system they've been running since Pop has been there.

My main issue with Sexton isn't even the fact that he's not getting a ton of assists. Assists are not a direct indicator of passing ability. My problem is that he often misses wide open guys, drives with his head down too much, and just has a lot of Jordan Clarkson-like tunnel vision. Osman, Nance, and Love are all good playmakers for their position, so again, I'm not super worried about Sexton not putting up 4-5 APG his rookie year. I am worried about the fact that I'm not convinced at all that he is ever going to be more than a league average passer with shotty vision.

I also think we will see the real value of an attacking PG like Sexton when he has a coaching willing to playing him more than 30 minutes a game and stresses how important it is to push the ball to him in transition. If he's paired with someone with great vision in the half court, it could some fun basketball to watch.

So Sexton looks better than he did at the start of the year, the team lacks talent compared to other NBA teams, but competes and doesn't throw in the towel just because they get down, they seem to put in the effort on defense despite clearly not knowing the nuances of playing great defense at the NBA level.. I feel like the coaching is OK given the above.

Love is key. He makes everyone else's role so much clearer. They need another top end starter/star at any position to be relevant again, but like what we've seen from Sexton (and believe me, after 20+ games I was wondering if the kid had any discernible NBA skill), Zizic (love the soft hands from the big guy), Cedi in his moments (he's probably better off the bench on a good team) and Nance (who's decision making w/the ball at the elbow is great.. just wish he had a better jumper).

If they had a better play-maker Collin, Z, Nance and Cedi would all look a good deal better, imo.

I wonder how real the draft-day Doncic deal was. Would no draft pick but 82 games of Luka this year been worth it? Cleveland has the 2nd largest Kurentovanje festival outside of Slovenia.. I mean, just sayin.

I have no doubt that Luka Doncic would be seen as the second coming of LeJesus in Cleveland before you even get to the Slovenia part of things.

That being said.... this season we know Sexton can score, many different ways and it appears to be an upward trend. I would like to see him a whole season (or most of one) with Kevin Love in the line up. Ditto for Cedi. This team is already better than 2010 because of Love but with him and the usual suspects this team looks even better than the 2013 Cavs, even if there is no Kyrie on it. There are players that appear to be somewhat complementary to one another, which something we definitely did not have in the early Kyrie years for the most part. Maybe TT/Kyrie together was the best we had. Let the tank roll but I'm ready for post-tanking with these guys.

Should be pointed out that half of those are non-PG's, which kind of validates the point that you don't need to have a point guard average that level of assists.

I hate tanking because I think it can do more harm than good, and it's so easy to miss in the draft while alienating your locker-room, pissing your fans off and destroying coach's careers in the process. Season's like this do happen, though, and you need to go big when they do (reach for the stars so to speak).

But re-building through the draft should be a 1 season affair. There are always 4-8 really good players in every draft and they are picked at all spots, not just the lottery. So if you know what you're doing, it shouldn't matter if you pick #1 or #15 or #27 or whatever.
