BFD with his 12 assists, when the offense is clicking for 3 quarters someone has to hit some shots….Niang, Merrill and JA tonight; the guy shot 5 for 15 from the field and that’s with connecting on 2 in the 4th quarter; he also had 6 turnovers despite the box score reading 5…for some reason , he wasn’t credited with a turnover on the play when he turned his ankle and did a Cirque de Soleil act to the baseline. Not to mention his stellar defense on perennial All Stars Micic and Mann.

To his credit, he did hustle defensively late in the game for a change, not that that could makeup for his effort earlier

Garland likes to pound the ball and is allergic to quick passes. That is one of his most alarming issues.

Multiple times in the previous game where the ball should have been passed to the short roll guy to tilt the defense but Darius always decides he could dribble out from the pock and roll coverage

This is my big issue, when we were rolling with Donny at pg the ball was advancing via passes. Garland dribbles it up (sometimes at a crawl pace) then dribbles some more before passing

His overall stats are bad for his usage

is there a stat on how long a player holds the ball as percentage of the whole possession? garland might top that list

This is also a testament to the underlying tendencies of his game. He almost always wants to make the pass to finish plays (assist-hunting). This is why we see him probe defenses aimlessly as he wants to find that assist opportunity. That is perfectly fine, for the most part.

However, when defenses become tighter, he needs to understand that passing the ball to a release valve is better than forcing the assist.

Mitchell also blew himself out playing that way against half assed pre asb teams who frankly outside the Clippers were struggling. You need half court sets in the playoffs.

I think we know something is off with Garland. For a player who was quite improved with his short game, his repression is baffling. Whether it was poor summer prep, a jaw break he never recovered from.....He lacks the quicks he should have and is looking frankly baffled himself were it has gone.

I am not opposed sitting Garland for a couple of games and letting 100% Mitchell if he can physically handle it. Make Mobley the 2nd option and kick those gd training wheels off. 15-25 shots a game for Evan.

I speculate that Garland just isn't naturally one of those fast-twitch athletes, he' wasn't blessed with being naturally physically gifted. He's got pretty normal physical traits but he works really hard to just be as good as he is. I don't think he has much more ceiling to attain on a physical level. I don't see him being in the league for an extended career either, I think when he starts to go downhill physically it's going to happen quicker than with other more naturally gifted athletes. I think Darius has to work his ass off just to be the player that he is right now.
I agree with the first half of your post, but not the last. Gifted athletes are harder hit when their physical skills decline because they rely on being bigger, faster, more explosive. For many its difficult to adjust when they lose their natural advantage. The Garland types who have fought to earn their abilities to compete are less affected because they've had to battle to get where they are. They use smarts over physical traits. I'm not saying Garland's physical abilities are limited, they aren't. He's just the physical specimen who can overwhelm you on the court. He needs no-how, cleverness, and misdirection to excel, which he often provides. I do think the beating he took throughout this season has him playing only to a fraction of his ability. Coming back from no solid foods into the toughest part of the schedule is a tough ask. He (and Mitchell) won't be whole again until next season.

Fuck this guy. He plays a losing brand of basketball right from the jump. First play of the game he does a patented Darius turnover, can't even execute a simple pass to initiate the offense. Way to set the tone, Darius. He has zero confidence in his shots. His body language and general demeanor suck. He's a defensive liability. He shrinks in the moment pretty much every time the team needs him to step up and make a play. I think he's just a fucking loser, period. I have no faith that he will turn it around. Prove me wrong, Garland.
I was hollering at the TV on the opening tip when DG did the cool thing of letting the ball bounce a bit before picking it up. Never mind the fact it bouncing directly AWAY from the hoop and the clock was running. Really dumb. Then he throws away the first pass.

Would be the dream trade to keep Mark and Sexton.
We still had no use for Sexton, especially since we still had LeVert at that point.

Figuring out a way to keep Markannen would have been nice though. But by insider reports, the Jazz were dead set on one of Markannen or Allen in the trade, and we (rightly) would not give up Allen.

As poorly as Garland shot last night, he still scored more than Okoro, CPJ, and LeVert combined - on fewer shots. Also, JBB went offense/defense to close the game and we still couldn't get stops with Okoro on the floor and Garland off of it. Okoro was a team worse -13 last night. LeVert scored a grand total of 4 points in 28 minutes on 9 shots.

That second sentence is definitely part of the problem. We tend to think of scorers being stat hunters, but it can be true of any stat that gets you paid. K Love was stat hunter when it came to rebounds. There are numerous bigs who will regularly get out of position on d to hunt blocks. DG tries to make the last pass. A little selfishness is necessary and understandable when it’s your stats that help get you notoriety and leads to getting paid. But winners make the right play more times than not, even if that play doesn’t show up in the box score.
