I've always wondered if Garland has a conditioning issue. Even before jaw injury. He always looks like he's tired and I think he uses the slower pace to catch his breath. When he doesn't have the ball, he's very stationary as well. (This is pure speculation on my part, I have nothing to back this up)

I've kind of wondered the same thing but I think I've come to the conclusion that Garland's body just isn't built to go at a high pace like other small guards are. He just might be a skilled basketball player that really isn't physically built to be what we think he should be.

I basically think of it as a distance runner vs a sprinter, they are just built very differently despite doing the same basic thing in running. I just think Garland might just built more like a normal person instead of the gifted athlete that most NBA players are. There is a weird high level of distance running at pace in the NBA with small periods of rest then sprinting for spurts all in a cycle then you sit then do it all over again.

I speculate that Garland just isn't naturally one of those fast-twitch athletes, he' wasn't blessed with being naturally physically gifted. He's got pretty normal physical traits but he works really hard to just be as good as he is. I don't think he has much more ceiling to attain on a physical level. I don't see him being in the league for an extended career either, I think when he starts to go downhill physically it's going to happen quicker than with other more naturally gifted athletes. I think Darius has to work his ass off just to be the player that he is right now.

We played a bad defensive team that didn't press him in the backcourt and he pushed the ball up the court most of the game. The problem is not that Garland is incapable of doing it, or that he lacks the conditioning to do it (unless JBB plays him 10+ minutes straight), it's that the other team is trying to stop it. When it's Garland, Niang, Okoro, LeVert, and Allen, the only feasible outlet is LeVert, and LeVert against press defense usually ends badly. If JBB wants to get the ball up the court quickly, he should tell Garland to pass the ball to LeVert when pressed and lived with the consequences.

The real problem with pace has been that without Wade or Mobley it was hard for us to get stops and harder still for us to get the defensive rebound. It's a lot easier to run off of missed baskets than made baskets.

Season from hell for this guy

Only hope is that a new coach fixes him next year. If not, this contract is a massive liability and the Cavs window with this core has closed before it even opened.

Watch the fast-break to tie the game at 111-111.

Now, Mobley and Allen BOTH shouldn't have stayed underneath to go for an offensive rebound. I admit that. One of them needed to start getting back. But they were already under the rim when LeVert took that shot in the paint.

LeVert was in the paint and off-balance (bad shot).

Merril was back.

Watch Garland. He was in the corner on that drive. And then he literally walked down the court and upgraded to a slow little jog as the Hornets got a free fast-break dunk.

My man ain't made up of the right stuff mentally.

Mitchell was winning without garland and Mitchell. Garland and Mitchell can’t even beat the hornets. It’s like kyrie and love when they were without lebron.

Thank you!!!!

I missed some of the end of the game so I re-watched the last five minutes. That play REALLY stuck out to me. I believe they had four guys across mid court before we had more than one (Sam). I think JA was out of frame but even LeVert and Mobley were dogging it back, but they had better excuses than DG ...

I do think part of the problem is conditioning/minutes though. How long was he in in the fourth? I remember him having conditioning issues in past seasons. And dude was DRENCHED in sweat at the end of the game. Not sure if JBB or Garland is to blame, probably a bit of both...

Jbb it's easier

Fuck this guy. He plays a losing brand of basketball right from the jump. First play of the game he does a patented Darius turnover, can't even execute a simple pass to initiate the offense. Way to set the tone, Darius. He has zero confidence in his shots. His body language and general demeanor suck. He's a defensive liability. He shrinks in the moment pretty much every time the team needs him to step up and make a play. I think he's just a fucking loser, period. I have no faith that he will turn it around. Prove me wrong, Garland.

It got so bad that when he turned his ankle I was yelling at the tv for him to stay down. We probably would have found a way to win if he would have sat down about then. Even with Levert's head buried up his own ass to the ears.

It is either of two things - He has not recovered from his injury or the tape is out on how to defend him and he has not adjusted. I am leaning towards the latter.
