I know this isn't a fair comparison, but I always thought this was going to be one of Garlands super powers and it's proven to not be at all...maybe one of his worst traits, he's pretty damn useless getting blitzed. Hell, we don't even really have anyone who plays it well. You'd hope that Mobley or Mitchell would do well, but until we have that guy...we are F-ed.

He is not good at it because he is small and can be physically bullied. Couple that with his incomprehensible lack of basketball iq in making quick reads and movement without the ball and you have a perfect defense for him.

Patiently waiting for @RchfldCavRaised to drop by, and tell us it's all going to be okay, and a new coach and a full offseason of skill work with Drew Hanlen will cleanse us of this season...

I've made a commitment to myself not to let any of the DG discourse get under my skin.

Seeing both his and Evan's skillset trajectory be impacted by the Donovan acquisition and more importantly, our FO's lack of urgency with pairing this foursome with a coach with a pulse and a clue of how to optimally use skillsets on offense, was so predictable that I am numb to it all now.

Have I been disheartened by watching both DG and Mobley's up and down play this season, yes.

I genuinely believe you can bring back the exact same roster, and put Spo, Pop, Udoka or potentially my top two candidates for this summer Jordi or Atkinson with the right team around them, in place and we legitimately have a championship contender AS CONSTRUCTED just by changing the coaching.

I believe that wholeheartedly, which is what makes me so conflicted on Koby. I'm not frustrated with any one player as much as I am with his lack of leadership on the right coaching.

The TLDR on Garland: I have been very frustrated watching his output, his demeanor while struggling and his insistence on playing how he prefers without adapting effectively to how better to compliment Don, EV and JA. But I also recognize those other 3 players arent being put in positions to have their roles clearly definied so they can compliment each other, either

I truly dont know what his "role" is and should be in this "system" when all 4 are healthy, night to night, and I'm saying that for DG, Mobley, Merrill, and CPJ as well. And quiet as it's kept, Max Strus is BETTER than he's looked all season and I believe his lack of a clearly defined role has affected his output as well.

His ppg average dropped 3 and his 3P% dropped about 4 compared to the last two seasons, but everything else is back to career averages. It's also quite clear that defenses have focused on stopping him exclusively because they don't fear anyone else except Merrill on the roster. That would account for most of the differences in ppg.

I expect him to be as effective as he was last season in the post season, which means we watch him struggle against two defenders as JBB stands there and does nothing to counter with his stupid looking face and arms crossed.

DG's clutch stat line in the last 3 seasons (defined by the NBA as last 5 min of the game w/ point differential of 5 pts or less)

23 - 24 (27 games): 25.6% FG, 22.2% 3P, 85.7% FT, 0.4 TOV
22 - 23 (36 games): 33.9% FG, 23.8% 3P, 68.4% FT, 0.4 TOV
21 - 22 (34 games): 36.9% FG, 24.0% 3P, 85.7% FT, 0.2 TOV

Can't fault a man for being consistent, right?

I thought that it was a good trend then I read the years. Oof

I thought he looked pretty decent against the Clips except for that dribbling off his foot shit, and his ill advised attempts to force shots in the restricted area that weren't there.

both of those things happened in clutch time...

I think we'd have to throw in 3 firsts with Garland to get Tyrese Maxey :( :( :( :( :(

ESPN must have been given the memo to pump the Garland to SA rumors because projections around him getting traded abound in this article:

Would a bunch of picks, Johnson, and a couple odds and ends be worth it to refill the cupboard if we had high confidence Donovan is sticking around? We'd potentially get back to square one in terms of draft capital even if we’re still down Lauri and up Donovan.

I'm ambivalent on moving Garland but I'd 100% prefer Vassell in any hypothetical SA trade.

Maxey is interesting though if we have to trade Mitchell. DM to Philly. Get Maxey and then get trade Garland to SA/NO for wings/picks/etc.
