Hearing ugly stuff about Garland. Can't see him being back next year and he would probably be the first wanting a cab ride out. I will post more in the game thread as it expands onto the whole team Saturday.
First problem is, who takes a cab anymore?

He's simmering, game three would be a great time for him to finally boil over and become aggressive. His percentages are climbing just need volume now

Garland is jealous of Mitchell and was taken a back by his January output. He thought he was the top option along with Mitchell. More Saturday.

It explains so much. It also explains why Mitchell is being patient. I fear Garland suffers from NPD. Granted most of the best players do, but Garland lacks that kind of talent.

Man, I don't think this is anywhere near the scandal you think it is. He's a pro athlete for fucks sake, you don't get to that level without inflated ego and belief in yourself.

He is a max contract player who is still really young, he absolutely should think of himself as a top option along with Mitchell!

I want DG to be an alpha-dog like that. I want him to watch Donovan Mitchell dominate, get jealous and think "I can fucking do this too." He is not far removed from being unguardable in all three areas of the court.

In fact, i'd go as far to say that Mitchell wants DG thinking like this too. For the Cavs to reach their potential they need Garland to assert himself as a top option also and have that killer instinct.

Mitchell isn't holding Garland or anyone else back. Mitchell is the guy running alongside a kid on a bike for the first time with no training wheels, hoping the kid gets it. Garland, Mobley, Strus, it's there for the taking and Donovan wants nothing more than for them to step up and take it.

Useless player, terrible contract

Could be co-responsible (with JBB) for the Cavs rebuild failing and losing Mitchell.

I'm waiting to eat the crow on Darius Garland that you promised @CavsKermit . I'm DYING to eat some crow on this kid.

Currently, the Cavs are roughly 12-13 points better with him OFF court this post-season.

They were a point or two better with him OFF the court this regular season.

And let me tell you, that's just not quite what you're looking for from the highest paid player on the team. FOr the team to be better when he's not in the game.

That last line is the problem. He’s not a bad player, but he’s being paid to be a great player. And because so much salary is tied up in him, it’s limits who else we can get. He will be getting around 40 million per year for the next 4 years - he has to be much better for us at that price.

If he can’t turn it around this is a serious strike against Kobys judgement.

A max player can't have one solid quarter a game. It's just not enough.

If we had Craig Porter Jr. instead of Darius Garland in these playoffs, would things have looked much different? The fact that you even have to think about that is all you need to know.

I think Altman's tenure here is going to ride on how he handles Garland moving forward. Is it just a bad year and he's primed to bounce back? Do you cut your losses and take what you can get for him this summer? Koby has to get this right, for his job and for any hope the Cavs have of being a serious contender moving forward.

I think it’s a lot closer than any of us want it to be. Putting them together in groupings (all of these guys are their teams starting PG):

Elite (3)
Curry, Luka (or Kyrie down a couple tiers), SGA

All Stars (6)
Haliburton, Brunson, Lillard, Booker, Maxey, Young,

Should Have Been All Stars (2)
Fox, Murray

Above Average (2)
Harden, Holiday

So that’s an easy 13, and he lucks out because Dallas has two and we are only counting one, and because his own teammate has shown him up in the PG role as well, but is really the starting two.

We don’t want to believe it and I really dislike these players, but both of these guys looked significantly better in their short stints this season as well:

Injured (2)
Morant, Ball

:blue:

On a game by game basis I’d understand the argument for any of this next group over Garland this year too:

The Debateables (5)
White, Cunningham, Russell, VanVleet, McCollum

Talent wise, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be considered a top 10 PG. His continued reliance on a play style that isn’t working, either through stubbornness or lack of ability to play any differently has moved him down my personal rankings significantly. He just got outplayed twice in a week by Terry Rozier for crying out loud.

I don’t know man. I’m in the group that is really coming around to the guy we are counting on to be our floor general being a major cause of the issues. The night and day difference in the way the team played in games that Mitchell ran the show is something I just can’t ignore or try to explain away by schedule.

The sample size is getting larger and larger, and I was totally one of those guys who refused to believe that Garland wasn’t the future.

I don’t know the answer, but it sure seems like DG not being able to figure it out consistently is the problem.

Edit: I found this ranking online that puts the tiers pretty damn closely to mine.

When we were having this debate with @CavsKermit back in March, I claimed DG was right around the 14th best PG in the league. This led to a debate between DG and if he was better than Lillard or not. I still stand firmly in the belief that DG’s play has him significantly below Lillard.

However, I now fully realize I was wrong to have DG as high as I did. Not only has his play continued to decline, but his emotional outbursts, sulking, and flat out weird behavior has dropped him even further down the list.

I am sick of our max contract, extremely talented PG getting outplayed by every other starting PG in the playoffs. If he still has any value once this season is over, the Cavs would be majorly foolish not to move him, whether Spida agrees to stay or not.
