The defense is going to be bad if you take Sexton out and leave Garland in, take Garland out and put Sexton in, or take them both out and put our best defender (Nwaba) on the floor... it'll probably still be bad... because this isn't a good team right now. We are still trying to find an identity and figure out who the franchise player is we're building around.View: https://twitter.com/twithersAP/status/1142539935091744769
If Cavaliers move somebody before the season I really think it will be Sexton. But where is the harm in trying them out together for a season? Yeah the defense will be bad. But the offensive upside is tantalizing. And both playing on and off the ball will only raise their value later on. But keep in mind that Darius Garland is a Beilein guy, Sexton was inherited. So the odds of him choosing Sexton over Garland if it comes to that aren't very high in my opinion. Unless Garland completely face plants.
We just went to four straight Finals and won a title in 2016. It is fine with me if we take our time with this thing and not rush because of the almighty "fit" on a team that'll likely be really bad regardless of the fit.
Love what I have seen out of Garland and it wouldn't surprise me if he were an All-Star level player some day. Sexton worked the hell out of his shot and (stunningly) had one of the best three-point shooting seasons by a teenaged rookie in NBA history.
I love Sexton's work ethic and attitude. I love Garland's incredible natural talent. No need to do anything drastic. Sometimes, you just have to take BPA and let the chips fall where they may.
I was listening to Bill Simmons today (yuck) and he had a hilariously bad take. He compared taking Garland a year after taking Sexton to taking Waiters a year after taking Irving. In actuality, this is the exact opposite of what we did in that draft. We took Waiters because of his perceived fit as a guy who was big enough to play either guard position and fit with Irving. In reality, Dame Lillard came off the board a couple picks later... THAT should have been our pick, which would've been the mindset we took into this draft. Take the BPA and figure it out later.
This was a homerun swing and I'm fine with it.
