Is there a difference between something like this happening ‘without’ people knowing vs actively pursuing someone who has done this?
I teach at a Catholic school. The Catholic Church had probably the worst sex abuse scandal in history. That scandal broke well before I started teaching.
Now, everyone associated with the church in any capacity has mandated ongoing training on how react when you suspect a child is being abused. I feel very comfortable working there because I feel the organization is doing whatever it can.
People obviously left the church never to return, and they are totally justified in that. However, many stayed and still send their kids to catholic schools, and feel comfortable that their kids are safe.
So my thought is: does it make it worse that they actively sought Watson? Is it better to make amends after the fact?
Edit- let me add I am not trying to compare the severity of crimes between Watson and the church. More how the timing of allegations affects the credibility of the organization.
