DONE DEAL Joe a Cav!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I CAN do it as an undefended layup, but what's the point?

Well, look at Z and tell me it's not worth it? Are you trying to tell me that if you were playing on the same team as Wally Skeezer you wouldn't appreciate the celebration immediately following a play like that?

INDEPENDENCE -- Finally, Joe Smith officially rejoined the Cavaliers today.

Ending a week of speculation, the veteran forward cleared waivers and signed with the Cavs for the rest of the season. His arrival had been rumored even before he gained his release from the Oklahoma City Thunder late Sunday night and cleared waivers.

After taking a physical, he reported to the Cavs practice facility in Independence, took part briefly in some scripted parts of practice and will travel with the team to Boston later today. His availability for Friday night's game against the Celtics has not been determined.

Smith was sent to Oklahoma City in the three-way trade that brought Mo WIlliams from Milwaukee last summer.

CLEVELAND, OH - March 5th, 2009 - The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent forward/center Joe Smith to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per league rules, terms of the contract were not released.

Smith, 33, played in 36 games (three starts) this season for the Oklahoma City Thunder and averaged 6.6 points on .454 shooting and 4.5 rebounds in 19.2 minutes per game before being waived on March 1. He is eligible to be on the Cavaliers’ postseason roster.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pounder has played 13 years in the NBA, including spending part of last season with Cleveland after being acquired on Feb. 21, 2008 in a three-team trade in which the Cavs also acquired Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace and Delonte West. In 27 regular season games (one start) with Cleveland, Smith averaged 8.1 points on .512 shooting and 5.0 rebounds in 21.4 minutes per game. He also played in all 13 postseason games during the 2008 Playoffs and averaged 6.6 points on .486 shooting and 4.6 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game.

I just don't understand why he wouldn't play tomorrow against Boston. To me that makes absolutely no sense.

I suppose it would be because he hasn't played games for anybody in a pretty long time and he may be a bit rusty. Of course, he couldn't be that much rustier than Lorenzen.

Or even Starbury. The guy hadn't played in a meaningful game in 14 months and the day he clears waivers he signs, takes his physical and plays all in the same day.

That article was updated with some more news an awesome quote from Joe:

After taking a physical, he reported to the Cavs practice facility in Independence, took part briefly in some scripted parts of practice and will travel with the team to Boston later today. He hopes to be able to play on Friday night against the Celtics. It will be his first trip to Boston since the Cavs lost Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last spring.

"That was a key aspect for me coming back here," Smith said after this afternoon's practice. "I want to try and get that taste out of my mouth."

I glad all these the trade deadline and signing is basically over for this season...Its time to focus on keeping this #1 seed and get this ship...Tomorrow's game will be even more interesting seeing joe back playing with us...I am really excited about this signing and thank ferry for working so hard & getting something done at the last minute

Doc Rivers on Mikki Moore and Joe Smith:

Rivers on Cleveland's acquisition of Joe Smith: "He's a terrific player, he's a veteran, and he's been through things. Mikki [Moore] has not been through playoffs and played a significant amount of minutes, but Mikki is a gifted player - he's long and athletic and he shoots. We're happy with what we got. We felt we had to get Joe or Mikki. We couldn't be left out in the cold. Whichever one [was available] first, we got. Joe is a tough defender; Mikki is longer. Joe, just from experience, could be a better defender, but we hope to educate Mikki."

But I can see this as a motivational ploy from Doc to light a fire under Mikki
