I doubt this is his last chance to coach in the NBA. However he likely will never receive an offer as good as this one.

This is probably his last chance to join the NBA AND be successful, I don't see him being able to take over a 60 win team again in the future.

You're right, he probably will get another offer somewhere down the road, but he's not going to take it if he doesn't inherit a winning team. Also, the older he gets, the bigger toll 82+ games will take on him. So I think his best shot at achieving success in the NBA is right now.

Yea...he looked like he was lumbering with that briefcase full of bowling balls on the way to his car :chuckles: It also seemed like his voice was coarse from screaming recently.

Agreed, just pointing out that if he decides he does want to make the jump to the NBA in the future it won't be that difficult for him to find a job.

Well if lebron wants to play for a former baller, that takes out New York and Chicago.

I may be wrong, but I didn't think Tom T. ever played, and I though Mike D'antoni only played in Italy.

I agree with you, but from an optimistic point of view he's already been through this process before. Ten years ago, he turned down the Hawks' offer because of his friends, family, and fans. But now he's 55 years old, and this is likely the best and last offer he's going to get to coach in the NBA. He gets double the salary, a good chance of coaching LeBron, and an opportunity to follow his ambition of coaching in the NBA. His inner circle and the fans are making the same case they did 10 years ago, but at this stage in his life and career Izzo might feel like it's the right time to move on, regardless of what it would mean to MSU.

Having said all that, I still think he's going to stay because I'm feeling really pessimistic right now...

I would make the argument that it's going to be even tougher for Izzo to leave now than in 2000. He's even more entrenched in the school now, where he's reached iconic status. Additionally, he has kids of his own now, who he would have to uproot and move away from their friends.

All in all, the situation is more complicated and there are more moving parts now than there were 10 years ago. If it were strictly his decision I think he would take the offer, but he feels an extreme sense of loyalty to his players, the MSU administration, his family, & the fanbase, all of whom are likely to be urging him to stay.

I think you should add a bunch of "probably"'s to that statement. You're not going out on a huge limb....but you really have no idea. I also know that you've been saying he's not going to leave since day 1.......so we'll see who's right ;)

Scott would probably need an offenseive minded assistant. Back in New jersey he had Frank handling the defense, Eddie Jordan handling the offense and he would be the hardass making sure everyone is doing what they should be.

But I actually think Izzo will take the job, just hiw I see it now.

Honestly, I really don't care what LeBron wants because chances are he doesn't have a clue what's best for him or the Cavs. Jordan was totally against having Phil Jackson as his coach. Pat Riley was mocked as being nothing but a slicked-back hairdo when he took over the Lakers job. How'd those two turn out?

But 10 years ago he was still relatively new to being a HC at MSU (just 5 years experience). He was a lot younger and still had a lot of time to make the leap to the NBA later if he chose to. Plus it was a worse team, with a worse owner, and he knew he was going to lose a ton of games.

You're right, he's an icon now. There isn't much more he can add to his legacy by staying at school (other than padding his number of championships). As far as noteriety he can't do too much more.

If he makes the jump to the NBA he has a whole knew game to conquer. Plus rather than jumping to a lottery team he can go to a contender with good owenrship.

Woj tweeted yesterday that Izzo is "sick of the cheating culture of college recruiting". That's something he wouldn't have to deal with in the NBA. He'd have to recruit a couple of weeks/months a year and be done with it. In college it's a year round process.

It was also stated that he was really close to taking the Hawks deal 10 years ago, but part of the reason he declined was that he knew he'd lose a lot of games. That's a fear he doesn't have to have here. Even if LeBron bolts we know it is going to be a quick rebuild because of Gilbert's mentality and desire to fill both the stadium and his casino.

Completely different scenarios. While you say he's entrenched, I can just as easily say he's accomplished what he needed to.

Why isn't anyone making the argument that LeBron HAS informed Gilbert that he likes both Izzo and Scott and would probably re-sign with the Cavs if either one is hired? Dan Gilbert in turn tells both Izzo and Scott the same thing, and BOTH Izzo and Scott want the job? How do we know Gilbert doesn't have his choice at this point?

We always seem to look at things the opposite way. We think these guys are thinking about if they should take the job, when it might be the other way around.... Gilbert is trying to determine which one best fits the Cavs....

.... just saying.

True about the loyalty, and no matter what he decides you can't help but respect that.

RT @gkketch: Just got word from a MSU guy that his golf game has been cancelled. Izzo to hold presser today to announce he's the Cavs guy.

He does have 2700+ followers, so he seems somewhat reputable.

That gkketch is the owner of orangebloods.com. Who has broken every story in the recent days about colleges switching athletic conferences. He's legit.
