Dwyane Wade: Back to Riley (#CavsLifer)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Ok, now make me feel better about Wade going against Livingston, Iguadala, and the rest of GS' bench...

Wade is diminished for sure, but so is Iggy, and that is why the bench role was perfect for Iggy, and it should fit Wade perfect too.

The key is to limit wade to 20-25 mins off the bench and then we will get the better version of Wade if not for shorter minutes.

I think Lue knows this, but he needed Wade and Lebron to figure this out. I think its hard for Lebron to comprehend how much Wade has aged over the last few years because there is not only a few years between them, Lebron is not human and might never age.

I've never felt GM Lebron was the greatest judge of talent. He seems to fall in love with certain players and just like them to the exclusion of other evidence. I look forward to him being a micromanaging team owner who screws things up after he retires.

Who was it here who said that Wade will start for some games. Won't work out. Then Wade will go to Ty Lue and ask to come off the bench himself to look like a great teammate?

Everything Cavs Thread: New Season Edition

“Honestly, starting Wade and Rose together ignores everything we’ve learned in the past three years about what creates an ultra efficient offense in today’s NBA, something the Cavs themselves took to its zenith in the last two years in the playoffs. It’s as if we’ve gone backwards in time. You have teams like the Rockets embracing today’s game and pushing the envelope even further this year. In preseason, their launching 50 threes a game.

I think Lue knows this, but wants everyone to see for themselves in these preseason games. It’s probably easier this way than telling Wade he’s coming off the bench and possibly ruffling James’ feathers.

This crappy Bulls team was spacing the floor and looking for threes all night. The Cavs had guys pass up threes to take pull up 20 footers.”

Props to D Wade. Regardless of who set it in motion, he's doing the right thing for the team.

agreed, he saw the truth quickly and man upped. Lot of respect for wade on this. And Lue was right to let wade and lbj come to this realization on their own.

I think wade will thrive in the new role

Glad it happened now. It’s the right move.

It will not only benefit the team.

It’s going to benefit JR.

It’s going to benefit Wade.

It’s going to benefit Rose and LeBron individually and even IT when he comes back.

Looking forward to Wade running the second unit.

You nailed it. 11 points on 5-7 shooting in 19 minutes.

He was great. Did exactly what he should do in the 2nd unit. I’d like to see him even more aggressive. The offense seemed to get stagnate at the end of the 3rd.

Wade looked much better and much more comfortable tonight in his new role.

Very excited to see how this thing looks by game 30, when hopefully we have a fully healthy roster of guys who are in shape, have adjusted to new roles and new teammates.

Very good game by DWade.

Shows why he is a perfect option to lead the second unit. He is a vocal leader as well. Someone that has won a lot and has individual acclaims. So, players would listen to him. That helps a lot as well. His passing was very good. Ran the second unit as well as you could have asked really.

He was great, poise, fully in control. Shows the experience of the man, a lot of guys dropping down from the starter role would come out gunning with a chip on the shoulder trying to prove a point. Hell of a weapon coming off the bench if he fully embraces it.

Going to be interesting how he plays on back to back.

Its possible that the solution is simply don't play him with Rose AND LeBron.

And he might have dead legs on back to backs.

This is a great read. Lue has his faults but you can see why every player and in general everyone who knows him, loves him. His man-management skills are elite. This also shows Lue isn't an idiot. He knew we were better off with JR starting and Wade running the second unit but by having Wade take the decision for himself, it was great coaching on his part. This is how the locker room atmosphere improves!

When Wade and Lue told the media about the move Monday, one thing became abundantly clear: Lue always felt like this was the right move; he just didn't want to force his viewpoint on Wade.

Said Lue:- "We talked about it before he got here, it'd be a better fit with him coming off the bench."

Said Wade:- "When me and coach talked before I decided to come here ... we both talked about the opportunity for me to kind of lead the second group, but we also both talked about what I've always done my whole career is I've always started and that's what I know so our goal was to see how it was."

He also knew if he told a future Hall of Famer in Wade that he just sacrificed $8 million in a buyout from the Chicago Bulls just to come off the bench without even having a chance to start, he could lose his respect before Wade even slipped on that new No. 9 jersey for the first time.

After an embarrassing blowout loss to the Orlando Magic in their third game, Wade came to Lue and asked to come off the bench - accepting Lue's original plan, just a couple of weeks later. Rather than say, "I told you so," Lue praised Wade for coming around on his own.

"He came to me and said, 'You know what Coach? What you said was right. I'd be able to be featured more in the second unit and be able to handle the ball more, so let's make that move and make that adjustment,'" Lue said. "That's what professionals do. No ego. He saw it was best for the team for him to come off the bench. It was his call and here we are."

Where "here" is is a common ground between Lue and Wade - a mutual respect, it would appear -- that the two can only build on as the year unfolds. While Lue can be criticized for testing Smith's patience like that, one could argue that he already had a mutual respect established with Smith that allowed him to handle the situation the way he did without losing him.
