Coming in at the 3 minute mark is pretty useless.

We also need to refrain from having him stand in the corners half the time. This is not effective (much like Love).

yeah boggles my mind they aren't running more pindowns. They've run a handful, but it's obvious Atlanta really made Korver a central option, and on Cavs he's JR-lite.

A lot of JRs buckets are made when he creates his shot after a few dribbles. Korver isn't going to get many buckets like that. Too much isolation and not enough movement will kill Korver's effectiveness and basically render him useless. He doesn't look all that comfortable to me just waiting for a spot up 3 pointer.

Big mistake if they aren't planning on doing this. I am at a loss as to why he wasn't inserted straight away - except if they're showcasing Shump? Korver needs to start.

I dunno...at this stage of his career, Korver is more of a 25 mpg bench player than an outright starter (he was coming off the bench in ATL this season). Not to mention that the Cavs desperately need as much defense as possible whenever Kyrie and Love are playing together. Despite Shump's relatively poor defensive season at least you can ask him to guard point guards and rest Kyrie. Plus I'm pretty sure JR will eventually start anyway if he's healthy so might as well get Korver used to a bench role. I think he will be successful on the Cavs even in a bench role...the Cavs just need time to get some practice time with him.

I just think having Korver start is the best idea to get him going early, get a lead early, and then you can incorporate other guys. Waiting 9 minutes to incorporate Korver and then have to rest your top guys is not a great idea, IMHO. Especially with no real back-up PG option to get him the ball.

Right now we should be focused on maximizing his time on the court with LBJ so we can create chemistry / work out new wrinkles offensively that we can utilize throughout the rest of the season and the playoffs.

I understand that people worry about our defense with him playing over Shump but what difference does it make when the team is only bringing defensive effort a quarter of the regular season?

Korver isn't being utilized correctly unless LBJ is on the floor b/c Irving's passing, while improved, will never be on the level of Lebron's. That coupled with Irving's green light to gun absent LBJ only exacerbates the misuse of Korver.

We already know what Shumpert is capable of in the playoffs. We don't know what integrating Korver correctly into this offense is capable of yet and we should be striving to find out sooner than later.

For what it's worth:

Kyrie on, lebron on, Love on Korver on

ORTG 97 DRTG 123 NETRTG -26 15 minutes 30 possessions

now this is a very small sample size, but as you can tell it's been very difficult to incorporate Korver into any lineup. I feel like we would have been better off and it would have been much easier to plug a big wing defender like Thabo into our lineups.

I feel like Korver potentially is going to be the best with Lebron OFF the court
(If the Cavs had a good passing PG cough Delly). When Lebron is on the court the other team is over helping off Lebron which limits the open Looks for Korver, even with the best passer in the world.

Kyrie looked best with Korver on and Lebron off the floor. He had tons of space to work with, but he just needs to improve his passing cause it seems like the only passes he makes are two double T and he can't really find shooters on the weakside.

Needs more sets for Korver, it's not that hard and i'm looking forward to more improvements from him and the team. Ty Lue needs to be better though.

I don't think one can extrapolate anything useful from these 30 possessions given Korver hasn't really had time to be integrated into the Cavs system.

I did note the low possessions and minutes.

No, I get that; my point is that such data should not be used as an indicator as it's not really meaningful given it's not a fair representation of possessions. In other words, these are basically the first 30 of such possessions in the set of all future possessions of Korver with Irving/Love/LeBron. So not only is it small, but it's not useful as predictive tool.

I'm not really arguing the overall point you're making, although I do think Korver would work just fine with the starters given practice - he's a natural fit, IMHO. With that said though, I do agree with your point regarding Thabo as I think the Cavs would show an overall greater net improvement with Thabo compared to Korver since wing defense was a greater need than 3-point shooting.

...Is it too late to trade Korver back for Thabo? :chuckle:

I know you are joking, but I thought about this scenario.

It is too early to trade him back to the Hawks, but I believe we could move him in a 3 team trade to acquire Thabo.
