Former Cavalier Luke Walton joins Cleveland coaching staff.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Am liking this hire... Luke is not a good HC but has proven to be a great assistant... might be a good shot to the arm of the vanilla offense if he acts more like an offensive assitant...

Luke Walton as the offensive guru a season after Sydney Lowe. It's like we're just gonna find the most unimaginative coaches out there and put them under JBB who's also a disaster unimaginative coach. It's like hiring 12 blind people hoping they can do touchup work on the Sistine chapel.

Fuck.

He’s had his share of problems, on and off the court during his coaching career, but he really is a sharp and knowledgeable coach.

I think he’ll do wonders with some of our offensive sets and game preparation.
I soured on him after the 'hey kids, do drugs!' thing he did into the camera while on the bench all those years ago.

holy shit luke walton! one of my favorite players back in the cavs dark ages.

Thanks for sharing this. I started really following the first year after LeBron left, so the dark ages were my first memories. I liked Walton because he seemed to bring a leadership presence that was lacking after Jamison was traded and Anthony Parker retired.

On a side note, this video reminded me that Chris Grant pulled off one of the weirdest lopsided trades I can recall. Speights, Ellington, and a first round pick for Jon Leuer of all people.

Thank the Athletic sports writer John Hollinger for that one!

Ah ok, I struggle to remember the 'washed up garbage time big man hoping for a ring' guys who have been on the Cleveland LeBrons over the years.

Which doesn't apply to Walton. He was a salary dump on us before LeBron came back and retired while Bron was still in Miami. Also he wasn't washed up in Cleveland. He was always garbage.

Walton was a very heady basketball player and it was like having a second PG on the floor the year he was in the second unit with Livingston and the Grizzlies players (they did screw up the tank though).

He was hired to be developmental coach with the Lakers, but they signed LBJ, and that was all she wrote.

Now, if you're trying to build around guys like Fox or Sexton, he's a bad hire. They're not slowing the game down and running ball movement sets. They're off to the races and high PNR players.

So yeah, you need a PG like Garland, and (hopefully) a guy like Mobley who can serve as a secondary facilitator from the elbow. But even the best defenses struggle with teams that move both bodies and the ball well.
