Free Agent Signings moved to AUG 1ST? WOW!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
"it doesn't change anything...."

It would be helpful if the Cavs knew what the Cap number was on Friday....this is probably the prime reason they can't wrap up the Sarunas deal. They don't REALLY know how much money they have left. I'm confident they'll get it done either way. But, not knowing the number for another 9 days will hurt, especially if they don't sign Sarunas.

it won't hurt, if anything they would have more money to throw at him....

Reports are they have 3.5 mil left, they could have up to 6.5 mil left when the cap finalizes..This just delays things by a week. Does it kind of stink, yes...Anything to really worry about? IMO no.

It sure doesn't HELP! I think you are missing my point. You just said yourself "they have 3.5 mil left, they could have up to 6.5 mil left when the cap finalizes." If it is 6.5M don't you think it would be more advantageous to find that out the day after tomorrow instead of August 1st????? I bet mgmt is crushed. They have to act under the assumption that they only have 3.5M left. Many free agents aren't going to wait around and hope the Cavs have 6.5M. Some very good members of the FA crop will sign during that extra 9 days....while the Cavs wait.

we only need one FA, and by the signs of it - he has verbally agreed.

and if a team was going to offer Sauranus the MLE, why wouldn't he wait a week to see if the Cavaliers had more money.

I don't know what you are hearing, but I haven't heard one team offering SJ the MLE.

We only need one FA? Who is playing backup center? How many players are under contract or have agreed to contracts? There would be many advantages to finding out we have an extra 3M this Friday instead of waiting until August 1. I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Either way, I give up.
And, Sarunas has verbally agreed to nothing....yet.

Varejo can't play backup Center?

Im with you though, it would have been nicer to have it done this Friday..

from BW:

Wait gets longer to sign players

Moratorium extended again; Cavaliers await final salary-cap figure

By Brian Windhorst

Beacon Journal sports writer

The moratorium has turned into a marathon.

Rumors became official Wednesday, when the NBA informed teams that the lawyers aren't finished with the language in the new collective bargaining agreement. Therefore, there will be an extension to the ``moratorium period,'' which was supposed to end Friday at 6 p.m. Teams can't officially sign players during the period, which had already been extended a week.

It means the Cavaliers will have to wait on signing Larry Hughes, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Donyell Marshall until at least next week. But that is just a formality -- of more importance is the delay in finalizing the salary cap.

The Cavaliers, like most teams, have been operating under the belief that the salary cap will be between $48-49 million. Based on their signings -- Hughes for five years and $60 million, Ilgauskas for five years and about $50 million and Marshall for four years and $22 million -- the team has about $3.5 million left to spend.

However, there's a chance the cap could jump to as much as $52 million, which would change the landscape and the Cavaliers' options.

Rumors from Israel to Lithuania to Ohio have the Cavaliers coming to an agreement with point guard Sarunas Jasikevicius.

Two Eastern Conference executives said Tuesday, though, that there is no deal in place and the Cavaliers are still considering their options at point guard. That could indeed involve the Lithuanian and Maccabi Tel Aviv star Jasikevicius, whom Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry has been interested in since his days in the Spurs' organization. There are other options.

Los Angeles Clippers restricted free-agent guard Marko Jaric is expected to visit the Cavaliers today or Friday. The Cavaliers are also believed to be exploring trades or sign-and-trade deals to acquire a point guard.

Other free agents that interest them, according to league insiders, are Miami Heat free agent Damon Jones, Portland Trail Blazers free agent Damon Stoudemire and Washington Wizards restricted free agent Steve Blake.

The Cavaliers' most tradable assets are power forward Drew Gooden and backup swingmen Luke Jackson and Sasha Pavlovic. The Cavaliers also have their cap space and a $2.1 million trade exception they got when they traded Jiri Welsch to the Milwaukee Bucks on draft day. The cap space and the exception allow them to take back more in salary than they give away, which could come into play.

Gooden might have become expendable with the signing of Marshall, who can start at power forward. Gooden is coming off a career season but is more of a scorer and rebounder than team defender. The Cavaliers have focused on improving their defense.

He would also be attractive in a trade, because he is entering the final year of his contract.

I guess I was tryin to say what BW just said in the above article.....he just said it better!LOL

quick question though Maximus, wouldn't the Paers sign him to the MLE right now, rather than risking the Cavaliers having more space to outbid them?

I think it's the Cavaliers call if they want him or not....

Either way, this decision will be made in the next 24 hours. He has higher bidders but it is down to 2 teams. God willing the Cavs will win out.

I hope so too. I know people say he has his faults, but I believe he is our best option for the PG position!

And I still don't trust most International scouting reports...The Spurs and Pacers wanted him, and I trust them more than I do Chad Ford saying he can't (fill in the blank)

Speaking of Chad Ford, read his draft bio on Darko if you can find it. I will look for it. He basically had Darko in the HOF after five years...

Oh well, I guess we have to wait a little longer but I think it also benefits the team as it gives us more time to assess our options, you know, step back a bit and look at things from all angles.

Also, the fact that Sarunas has waited it out this long despite the fact that others teams have supposedly offered him more money to play there really gives me hope. I really don't think he would if he didn't have us as his no.1 choice of destination!

It could change things...you never know if a player has a change of heart. I mean come on, this is Cleveland - something bad is bound to happen, right? LOL.
