The Washington Post is VERY guilty of this... Glad they're being called out..

They did numerous hit pieces and character assassination stories against political opponents of the firm; rather disgusting. But, at the same time, I get the sense that because this is true, that "fake news" is being elevated by way of false equivalence... As if to say "don't tell me I shouldn't believe in fake news if you read the Washington Post."

Again, this position is nonsensical and irrational.

I don't know if people are defending fake news as much as they are showing legacy news isn't exactly real news.

This argument, and I can only speak for myself, was birthed by people who follow cnn wp etc hypocritically questioning the validity of news.

All news is lacking in integrity, and people need to be cognizant. All of it.

The term itself though, "legacy," implies somehow that actual news has been replaced with not only propaganda but fairy tales. It's disturbing to say the least, again, that we are somehow entering this post-truth/post-values era where objective reality no longer exists or matters.

I'm not sure what you mean by this?

I suppose this is true, but again, it's a matter of degree. It's like walking into a room that has the smell of burned toast and is unpleasant to be in, compared to walking into a vacuum chamber; yes, both lack fresh air, but the difference here is rather significant.

This is why I think it dangerous to equate "fake news" with "real news;" but I do applaud pointing out bullshit from the mainstream media. With that said, this has been brewing for some time. Fox News basically invented modern American yellow journalism. You can't go, what two decades, with a fake news cable network pushing agenda over fact and not think that will have an affect on your population. Now, it's simply spiraled out of control with the advent of social media being a source and means of the dissemination of actual information.

Again, to me, it's pathetic. It speaks to the anti-intellectual nature of our society. I hate to say this, but, it speaks to the literal stupidity of the American voter.

The other issue is that being able to recognize fake news isn't the problem.

The problem is trying to define it legally in a truly objective manner so that such legal definition is clear, fair, not able to be applied in a biased or unfair manner, and will not infringe on legitimate free speech by private citizens.

It's not enough to have the right intent when drafting a law - it's the actual text that matters. And i don't have any faith that anyone can come up with an acceptable legal definition of fake news, and how that definition should be applied.

It gets particulalrly squirrely if you consider something like The Onion, and how to define legitimate satire/parody in a truly objective manner that cannot be abused or applied unfairly.

NO NO NO and NO

A story that contains opinion titled to one view and a totally fabricated story are not the same thing at all. Did you ever study Journalism? You would fail the the 100 level course my man.

Not that the tilted story is good journalism, but you cant say they are both the same.

I have taught journalism in HS in the past. I can not believe we are trying to say FAKE NEWS that is bogus is the same as someone who wrongly injects their opinion. They are very different cases. One is poor journalism and one is not journalism at all. You learn this in Journalism 101!

Making stuff up is called fictional creative writing. It is not ever news. Holy crap we have third graders that know better.

Again trying to move this discussion to the thread that was created for it.

When you report something you have proof is incorrect and present it as fact, how is that "giving it a tilt" and not "fictional writing" - I gave examples above of CNN's "reporting" during the election.

When CNN shows a video they edited and reports a "tilt" that contradicts the actual footage that they edited out, how is that "journalism". If anything, it's worse than the guy who just makes up random stuff with no basis in reality.

I don't think anyone is defending fake news. People are opposed to attempting to censor "fake news" because there is a serious issue of who determines what is fake enough to censor. There is a huge gulf between 100% made up and 100% accurate and sometimes the stuff in the middle can be a bigger issue than the 100% made up stuff.

And sometimes the 100% made up stuff comes from the people in charge (i.e. Iraq's weapons of mass destruction)

Matt Drudge really gained prominence from breaking the Monica Lewinski story, which was widely considered bogus...until it wasn't.

Yep. That pig Hillary was out there the other day imploring people in Congress to do something about it because people's lives are at risk. That will be the justification. I'm just wondering why she never shed a tear about the thousands and thousands of people that have died because of fake news like the Iraqi WMDs.

I think the advent of the buzz word fake news is going to be a huge pain in the ass for those who created it for their agenda.

Whoops, people are running over all news with a fine tooth comb now
