CLEVELAND – Very few players – if any – in the NBA envy Justin Anderson right about now.
That’s because the 76ers small forward will have the task of defending four-time league MVP LeBron James in Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quickens Loan Arena.
With a blend of size, strength and athleticism, James is one of the toughest players in the league to defend. He’s also a do-it-all type of player.
James ranks eighth in the league in scoring at 26 points per game. He’s sixth in the league in assists (8.8) and 18th in rebounding (8.4).
The 6-foot-6, chiseled 228-pound Anderson will try to use his strenght and quickness and a disrupting style to defend the 6-8, 250-pound James.
“He’s so strong,” Anderson said. “He’s so physical. He’s also tall … So he can also see over you sometimes.
“So my biggest thing is playing big tonight, having hands up for everything. I can just try to contain him.”
James is just as happy to pass the ball as shooting it, so it’s defending him is more than trying to stop him one-on-one.
“He gets past the first line of defense and puts pressure on other teammates, and he’s dropping it off for dunks and threes and things like that,” Anderson said. “So we have to obey our content and contain him and contain the other guys around him.”
Anderson feels doing that will be the biggest key to slowing James down. He doesn’t think there’s a stopper for a guy of James’ stature.
“Even the LeBron stoppers of the past, he still got through them,” Anderson said. “He’s going to do what he does. You have to do is do what you do and hope that you have the better night.”
