Goodbye Larry Nance Jr.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We made that deal 1 hour before the deadline, why the hurry?

Because things can always go wrong when you play it too close to the wire. Ask Sashi. Also, as the day wears on and options start narrowing for other teams, one of them may have stepped in and made a deal under our feet, either for Clarkson (for an expiring and maybe getting a future second from L.A. in return), Nance (for a low first), or both. So when Koby had one deal set, he pulled the trigger so we couldn't be undercut, and so he could then concentrate on the three way with Sac and Utah.

I also believe Magic leaked that article through Ramona Shelburne saying "that he was going to skip the 2018 FA" to make it seem like they were not nearly as desperate as before for exactly that trade scenario.

He may well have leaked it - doesn't mean it wasn't true. Or maybe he didn't. In any case, the question is should Koby have gambled and called Magic's bluff, or not?

That deal is really questionable from the Lakers' perspective because of the timing. Clarkson was a bit overpaid, but Nance was a huge bargain. They were real assets, not dead cap soace. Suppose the Lakers cleared this cap space now for just a second rounder, but it turns out that they can't get the max player in FA they desire? They'd have screwed themselves out of two pretty good players and gotten little in return.

Or suppose Magic just decided to wait until draft night, or even FA itself, if he couldn't get a first right now? Koby had to consider the possibility that Magic would do that, and we'd be left high and dry if that's the case. Koby may have thought that was the smarter play for the Lakers -- only getting rid of those two guys when they know they actually will be using that extra cap space. So he jumped on the deal when it was there, and didn't try to get too cute.

Koby really handled this well - he didn't get greedy and risk losing a very good deal for the Cavs just to try to get the perfect deal. That would have been the Chris Grant move - not making good deals because you believe the guy on the other side will cave and offer you a better one. Instead Koby made his move to cash in what is really a winning deal for both sides.

What was the idea behind trading for Nance and JC before acquiring Hill and Hood? would it have pressured Magic? We made that deal 1 hour before the deadline, why the hurry?

Lakers fans are ecstatic about that trade and Magic should be too. He had very very very limited options.

I think they had to make the Lakers trade before the Hood and Hill trade so the Lakers wouldn't have second thoughts on it. The lakers were doing it to clear cap for LeBron and the minute Hood and Hill were added to the string of deals, the odds of LeBron leaving changed. You would think the Lakers would then reevaluate if it was worth it to clear the cap space if their main target was less likely to come.

I think Koby knew that the Lakers were going to ask for a first round pick regardless. If we waited till after the Hood and Hill deal, the Lakers weren't going to take Zizic back so that the Cavs can go ahead and make one more deal on top of the Nance and Clarkson deal. They knew we had the Kyrie trade exception or Korver to attach to the pick to get another good player.

Right, and I assume some of the same people lamenting the loss of a late round first would be blasting Koby had the deal(s) fell through due to his reluctance to include the pick. :chuckle:

We stole Nance and Clarkson from the Lakers. This guy is incredible out there. He's a hustle big who doesn't have to take 5 seconds to gather himself before jumping 6 inches off the floor like TT.

Fixed, was thinking the same but you beat me to the post...:chuckle:

Just got done watching the game...I DVR'd it knowing I wouldn't be able to watch until this morning.

Great game, and the offensive flow is just significantly better with Nance setting the screen. The big thing you see is the defender guarding the corner three needs to stay home a beat longer because Nance actually has the ability to finish. It sets up the pass to the corner so well....and two ways. Either the skip pass from the ball-handler to the shooter in the corner, or the immediate corner pass from Nance to the corner if he gets the ball on the roll. It's really fun to watch.

And honestly....I was done with TT last night, when he made one of the dumbest plays I've ever seen a player make. Carmelo Anthony fires a missile underneath to Steven Adams that is sailing WAAAYYYY out of bounds. Tristan jumps his 25 inch vertical, tips the ball to save it in bounds, right to Adams under the hoop. What the hell was he thinking....??!?!?!?? I'm still trying to piece it together. Between his physical limitations and low basketball IQ, he's got to be the worst contact in the NBA by far.....

The play starts at the 2:42 mark

Watching Tristan trying to defend Adams was like the basketball equivalent of a "Prison Rape"..:chuckle:

TT was being eaten alive by Adams last night. TT used to be able to defend bigs. Seems like he's lost a lot of strength.

It appears like the ball hit the backboard, or at least came really close. I don't know, if he didn't make an attempt there would be people saying he's too passive.

The other thing was that had we still had that

Larry Sr. is such a nice guy, and a genuine class act. Seems like he raised his son the same way.
