Goodbye Larry Nance Jr.

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cavs were never able to put enough shooters around to see him really thrive in Cle, which is a shame because he wanted to be here.

Sucks to see him go, but I've always been a little nervous about his health and durability.

He should be a good fit in Portland. I wish the guy the best of luck:

John Hollinger on Nance's fit in Portland

He's a really good fit, basically. Nance isn't a shooter, but he's a really good playmaker for others who excels in "short-roll" situations — such as when opponents trap Damian Lillard — and is also an enthusiastic screen setter and an electric dunker. Moreover, Nance fills the need on Portland's roster for a "true" 4 who can toggle to the 5 in some small-ball situations, and is signed for two more years.

This was Larry Nance Jr week on Cavs twitter. Kinda crazy it went down this week.

I do hope the best for LNJ in Portland. I'll definitely catch some Blazer games this coming season.

Thanks Larry Nance JR. It was fun rooting for you and only hope the best for you in Portland.

Emotional reaction:

not okay with this unless LNJ requested it. Can’t overstate how important it is to have guys who actually want to be here…being here.
Same here. I actually hate this deal because of that.

LNJ wants to stay in Cleveland and he’s traded to Portland. Kevin Love wants to go to Portland and he’s staying in Cleveland (at least for now).

What is the primary explanation for this?

1). The contracts and projected playing ability make Nance a more valuable trade asset that Love.
2). Koby is an idiot.

This should be a poll.

I wish Nance luck but they'll get tired of him in Portland when he's out all the time. To me if you're not available you're nearly worthless as a player.

I loved LNJ and he showed improvement defensively and as a team leader. I must admit it drove me nuts to watch him on the offensive end. For all his electrifying dunks he seemed to clang an almost equal number off the back iron, and his touch around the paint was horrible unless it was a put-back.

Larry should be great on the Trailblazers.
Makes winning plays, stays within himself, moves the ball, defends 2 or 3 positions.
Kind of guy who looks like he's not enough on a bad team and the perfect fit on a good one.
I'd say the Cavs did his talents a disservice the last few years, but why bash the org any further?
I'm not against the move, but I think the Cavs have a top down dysfunction that losing a guy like Larry kind of underscores.

Pelinka told Larry to buy a house in LA then traded him to Cleveland. Bron leaves and the Cavs start their rebuild. Buys a home, embraces the community, laughs off trade rumors on Twitter all summer then actually gets traded during his Cavs social media “player of the week” push.

With his luck, Dame will request a trade next year and he’ll be stuck in another rebuild :frown:

Great dude. Great attitude. Was a joy to cheer for. Class act, just like his dad

The Cavs did right by Nance here, as best they could. He's a great fit on Portland and was made expendable here by Mobley. Fedor implies Nance was questioning his role, playing time, position. No problem with that, either. He's a class act and I hate to see him go, but I'm neither shocked nor upset.

This trade was absolutely a collaboration. I had expressed my desire to win now to Koby and the front office if we could find a deal that helped everyone, and they certainly did that. Going to Portland is something that I am extremely excited about. This is a team that has seen the biggest stages and is hungry for more, and I’m thrilled that they believe I can help them climb higher. This opportunity is one that I’m very ready to take advantage of and I have the Cavs to thank for preparing me for it.

I think we can put to rest any idea at all that the Cavs did wrong by Larry, surprised him, or did something he was not on board and even desiring.

And they went out of their way to balance a return they liked with not putting Nance on a team in a similar position to the Cavs.
