"How many MVP's will LeBron get?" debate on Around the NBA

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't know, have there ever been more than 4-5 contenders for the MVP in the league? There's always those dark horses, but it always seems there's a group of people at the top that everyone considers MVP caliber.

If the Cavs keep finishing in the top 3 of the league and Lebron keeps performing like he has then there's no reason that he can't pick up at least 3 more.

The Media really gives MVPs to players based on how they break out, how much they deserve it, the competition in the league each year, etc.

You're almost never going to have past 2 or 3 consecutive MVP trophies. I think Bird's as close as you get to that.

But if the rest of the league is bad, then there's no other candidate that deserves it like LBJ.

Kareem even won an MVP because there were no other good players to give it to (and he didn't even make the playoffs)... if there was such an award for best player, Kareem probably should've won it at least 8 times in the 70s, while MJ gets 6 in the 90s alone.

Kareem got 6 for a 20 year career (last being in 1980) while MJ got 5 ('88, '91-'92, '96, '98).

LeBron has a media that's pretty picky about who to choose, so unless they change the ballot rules, then he's probably good for 6 at most.

Even if we have the same team for the next five years, I expect LBJ to get at least 4 MVPs in his career. We are going to have the best record next year, assuming team stays the same, and I think he will go back to back.

Wade is going to have to get the Heat to 60 next season and stay healthy to have a shot. Kobsters will always have a shot but as long as the Cavs do better LBJ will be #1. Howard won't win one until they are clearly the best team with the best record in the league. CP3, with the right team, has the best shot to take over #1 because he can put up some stupid crazy numbers.

I kind of agree that we'll become desensitized to what he's doing. I mean, we already are. He's done such amazing things already that we're just counting down things he HASN'T done, rather than appreciate amazing things he's doing that he's already done. I could definitely see, if he wins next year, voters feeling that same type of thing, and waiting for him to do something "special." And of course, any other player in the league who is doing special things is just doing shit LeBron did years ago.

4 or 5 at this current pace...

I can see him having 3 by the time he's 30 and perhaps grabbing another 1 or 2 after that..

I could see LeBron winning 4, and I think that's really the upper limit. It's not based on his talent. But I think eventually other star players are going to want to play with LeBron, and they'll take pay cuts, etc to come play with him. Even if that doesn't happen, eventually his supporting cast (guys like Mo and Delonte) are going to start getting more credit for the Cavs success. The media, and many fans in general, honestly believe the Cavs are only LeBron, and that he's carrying everyone else. Once that idea changes a little, and it will with a championship win (see Detroit's team, who were considered a bunch of cast offs before they won), then LeBron is going to get less credit for his team's success. That will really open the door for guys like Wade, who will win the award because they're doing more with less. The media won't want someone like Wade, CP3 or Howard to never win an MVP award, so they'll look for any excuse they can to give them one eventually.

Let's see, he's 24 now... I'm going with 9 MVPs before he retires. Yes, he's going to be that amazing. We're going to look back on this year and go, "He really won his first MVP with those stats?"

We are going to be spitting on this year when we look back. Pft championship, two all stars, MVP, COY REOY (real executive of year), best defense. In ten years we will think how did this team even win a championship, they didn't have an extreme amount of talent but they did have great cogs in the machine. We will look at this year as the first of 8.

Yes, this is the way we all need to start thinking. We have the future GOAT. I love getting to watch history in the making twice. At least this time the one making history doesn't make my blood boil and give me nightmares for years.

Unfortunatley, I think this award is becoming a "who's turn is it" award.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wade or CP3 win it next year if their teams net 50+ wins.

If the most recent years are any indicator, it's going to be 60+ wins or you don't have a chance.

What about the Lakers last year? I thought they only had like high 50s win total.

You're right, Kobe only won 57 games last year. Though, it was a dogfight to finish out with the #1 record in the West. And you pretty much knew Kobe was going to win it. They couldn't let him go his whole career without one.
