Hue Jackson and Todd Haley Fired

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think we need to see how we finish the year. If the team fights and goes 3-3 or better, it makes an interesting choice. It is a small sample size, but the last 2 weeks we look like a real NFL team, we had a good game plan going into both games, KC is just so much better then we were and we hit with some injury's. But if we look discipline, come out and compete what do you do.

Don't take this as bashing Kitchens.

Kitchens has had a very nondescript career. 7 years as TE coach, 4 years as QB coach, then back down to RB coach (I would assume going from QB coach to RB coach is a demotion, but not 100% sure what was going on in Arizona. Maybe a lateral move?), then 2 years as RB coach before he ever gets to call plays. And he needed 2 guys to get fired midseason to have a chance to call plays at 43. Now, he certainly knows more football than me. But I'd guess there are alot of NFL assistants who have accomplished at least that much, or had a similar resume by that age.

And even with the meh-ness of his resume, he can make this offense look good.

I take 2 conclusions away from this. 1.) Hailey is an absolute moron 2.) Imagine what really good offensive mind could do?

So no disrespect to Kitchens, but we can do better than him.

Well two details in the middle there. When Kitchens had Carson Palmer playing his best ball, he also had an emergency heart surgery. Secondly, Byron Leftwich came in as the assistant to Kitchens in the QB room, and then the running backs coach Stump Mitchell left the team for another offer. What I find interesting in Kitchens is that he played quarterback but coached multiple other positions. That shows a breadth of understanding of offense and a lot of trust from Arians. My question was always how the play calling will look, and so far so good.

Offense looks completely revamped? It's very fun to watch all the options that the Browns have on offense with Mayfield leading the charge. He finally has players to pass it to??

Can somebody explain the changes?

Even the defense is better. What are they specifically doing different on the defensive end?

After yesterday and want to hire Hue and Haley back just so we can fire them again.

Amazing that neither of them can figure out how to run a NFL level offense.

Given that he's only called plays for two games, is it even fair to say that we know what his ceiling is? I mean, how about at least giving him the bye week to work on some more stuff, and see how he does the rest of the season?

If the offense -- without a true No. 1 receiver -- is playing well, and Mayfield is seeming to work well with Kitchens, I think you need more than "maybe someone else could do better" before disqualifying Kitchens from consideration.

I agree with you 95% of the time, Q.

And sure, maybe we close the last 8 games with Kitchens as a top 5 NFL offense and he stays...

But it’s nearly a foregone conclusion that he’s also a goner, despite doing a commendable job.

We have an amazing opportunity to hire a new staff this offseason at the most pivotal time since our return in ‘99. This is it. This is that window.

We have to nail this hire.

2 games with Gregg as HC and Freddie calling plays isn’t enough for me to nuke my opportunity.

In fact, 8 “encouraging” games wouldn’t be enough... barring us basically winning out and going to the playoffs.

I know we’ve been starved for average coaching... just average... given what’s transpired here recently.

Mediocrity looks like the Nectar of the Gods.

I’m just saying, we need to go big this offseason. It’s our one shot.

I feel like we could pretty easily keep Kitchens on with a new head coach if he does a good job to finish out the year. It depends on who we'd hire for coach, but I imagine a lot of guys wouldn't mind stepping into a situation where they already have a solid OC in place who already knows the players and their strengths and weaknesses. That's probably especially true of any college coaches we may look at who are lacking in a ton of NFL connections.

But, of course, it all depends on how the rest of this season plays out. Need to see more.

Well, Freddie and Bruce Arians are very familiar.

That’s about the only way I’d see it happening... if Arians ends up with the job.

Any other young HC hire is likely getting the job due to his offensive prowess and will want to install his own system.

Do you guys think if Dorsey hired Dave Toub, that they would keep kitchens or anyone on the staff?

Marvin Lewis still being the coach there is such a joke. Should have been fired about 10 years ago.

Anyway. If Hue Jackson joins them we better whoop their ass.

I thought for sure he'd be gone after last year, but the man has that Hue Jackson cockroach ability to just keep surviving the apocalypse while better men take the fall. Probably where Hue learned it from, to be honest. Main difference is that Lewis is pretty much just an average to slightly below-average coach, whereas Hue is a fucking buffoon.

A half a season isn't going to change my opinion of him.

He has a 10+ year track record in the NFL. This is the first time he's been a coordinator, and he needed 2 firings to do. He's never been more than a position coach until 2 weeks ago. We're going to be the top job open, and whoever the best candidate for OC is will have a better resume than him. Or, we get a top HC who wants to call the plays.

Good for him for being better than Haley and Hue with what most of us agree is good talent against 2 crappy defenses. Maybe he parlays that into an OC job somewhere. Or maybe he stays on as a position coach. I am sure he's adequate, but nothing about him screams him being a top offensive mind that this job should attract.
