I agree with everything except for this last point. I think this is revisionist history. Shumpert has not had one good game against the Warriors in the postseason. To me, Shumpert has had two signature playoff series: guarding DeRozan in 2016 and Butler in 2015. He is much better at guarding guys who like to isolate in order to score. Players that move around and score off of cuts always torch Shumpert. This doesn't shock me in the least bit. I could stand the bad shooting if he was defending at an elite level. But its alomst painful to watch him defend. @Chris Parker talks a lot that he is always trying to draw offense fouls by flailing and getting out of position. I think he is right to an extent. But I also think he avoids contact (like fighting through screens) as much as humanly possible.
You know who else is asked to guard point guards? Liggins and he has looked great at it. I think its and effort and caring thing. He isnt fighting for a contract so he has let off the peddle. Hopefully that intensity returns for the playoffs.
Now here is why the cavs can't trade him... Against the warriors he can switch 1-4 and is awesome against steph and thompson because his quick hands. He doesnt have to be overly physical with them just be right there with them and get a hand in their face or strip the ball. He is really long and moves laterally quickly. Cavs have to have him for that series. Period.
This is why I have always advocated for Liggins. Liggins is a bad offensive player with low confidence, but he excels running through screens and keeping up with players. The dilemma now, though, is that if Liggins is not willing to shoot he is equally unplayable.
I think the Cavs best bet may be to have Swish, Korver, and Deron as the three primary guards during a Finals series, and let Shump play five-to-ten minutes per game if we need an extra defender. Otherwise, I think the bench is Deron, Korver, and RJ as everyday players; and Shumpert, D-Will 2, Frye, Liggins, and Sanders as situational players depending on the matchup. James Jones and Felder will never play as long as games are competitive, and frankly, I imagine it is the same with Liggins and Sanders.
