Is the NFL in decline?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm of the belief that some of the celebrations add "character", "lore" and other things that are very much missing in the more sterile environment in the NFL.

It's also gotten to a point where anything that ISN'T simply handing the ball to the official? You get flagged. No emotions are allowed in this league, and it's absurd.

I'm taking a stand this week, no TNF for me.

But you're going to miss the clash between the Titans and the Jaguars!!! You can't miss that!

...

I don't understand how anyone could watch these games. Even if you gamble, Even if you have a fantasy team? Why bother. They're HORRIBLE. If Cleveland didn't have a franchise? I wouldn't bother to watch a single game of NFL Football.

I haven't watched a complete NFL game in at least five years (and that includes playoffs and Super Bowls), and I can honestly say I don't miss it AT ALL.

I'll take the NBA and CFB any day over the NFL.

Same here.

The NFL really used to be an enjoyable league to follow/watch like 10-15 years ago. It really is a shame what it has become. Goodell has seriously derailed this league...I want Tagliabue back.

The NFL in the year 2016 makes me nostalgic for the XFL.

I'm being serious, it's THAT bad. At least the XFL was TRYING to let it's players create personalities for themselves, had some interesting rules and even had an INTERESTING pre game show (Opie and Anthony? Sign me the fuck up for that versus the CBS/FOX Crews.)

I saw a pretty crappy article recently that was trying to stick up for the NFL's decline in ratings, blaming it on "white males" not wanting to watch because of Colin Kaepernick.

I must say I'm confused by that logic, because while I think there's a nugget of truth to it? I think it's more of a "final straw" sort of thing versus people just going "I don't want to watch because i don't like him DISRESPECTING ARR TROOPS".

People were looking for an out and I imagine that was the out a lot of people were looking for.

Blaming any problem on white males is the new thing. Didnt you know @Triple-S?

I know I'm venturing into political territory, but I'm just stunned to see these people pop up out of nowhere suddenly being Colin Kaepernick fans because of what he's done recently.

People that are Tumblristas that have no interest in football are suddenly fans of the guy and get pissed at anyone that says anything negative about the guy.

Kaepernick is an asshole, not because of his beliefs but because he's an asshole. It gets frustrating because I'm empathetic towards anyone that wants to stand up for justice, but it's getting to the point where I can't watch a football game or criticize someone without being tagged as an asshole.

Sometimes people need a break, and just want to shut off their brains for a few hours.

And I feel awful saying that because what they're standing up for IS important. But you know...I just want a moment of peace and relaxation in my life.

e: here's the article

What I don't get is...if his logic is correct? Why is the NBA, which is full of athletes that have taken stands (like our own LeBron James) experiencing a boom in ratings and popularity?

One friend of mine is a casual Niners fan and has similar left-leaning political views. He was all worked up I didn't support Kaepernick's "protest," but then I sent him this article:

http://atlantablackstar.com/2016/09/08/how-colin-kaepernicks-teammate-eric-reid-helped-him-shift-sitting-kneeling/

Kaepernick, newly a vegan who waited until right before the start of camp to get his thumb surgically repaired, was completely self-serving when he started all of this. If an actual NFL talent had led the protest and worked conscientiously with political organizers, it could have been powerful. Instead we get twice the divisiveness as a community from a guy who can't even play his position well.

Kaepernick had a monstrous public failure exposed and coached through by his much more tactful teammate. I think people following the 49ers - all 347 of us left - should be looking at Eric Reid with more respect as a team leader. He pulled Kaepernick's bacon out of the fire.

That said, this shouldn't be viewed as a black vs. white thing. I think white guys whining about public scrutiny from the disenfranchised is really pitiful. The answer should be working together on clear social problems, just as it would have been best if Kaepernick showed a little self control and let actual leaders in this Black Lives Matter call the shots on their own movement.
