Can someone who is a better student of the game provide any reasons why CPJ is not getting more PT?

I'm hoping he doesn't get benched for taking and missing a couple shots. I'm trying to give JBB the benefit of the doubt and ask whether or not CPJ is missing defensive rotations. He's a solid on-ball defender and gets a lot of good counting stats but I'm not sharp enough to tell how his team defense is. I did notice him miss one box out that led to an ORB and two points.

Its rather simple. The answer is JB.

There’s nothing logical about what this asshole does. No point and even giving him the benefit of the doubt by trying to psychoanalyze it like he has a gameplan

NBA coaches are wary of rookie point guards. It’s a tough position to learn. CPJ however proved his worth early when among other things he drove right at Embiid for a bucket in OT.

He was ahead of Merrill before the latter went crazy from the three point line. Now he’s behind DM, DG, Vert, Sam and maybe Ice or Strus when they play guard.

CPJ is strictly a PG though as he doesn’t have a 3 point shot.

After the Garland injury DM proved he could run the offense (better than DM TBH). Caris also is an initiator who has a three point shot and can score.

No way to play him when everyone is healthy and in any case no NBA coach will trust a rookie PG in the playoffs unless it’s Magic or some other superstar.

He probably should have seen more minutes vs ATL but Garland was going to be reinserted at some point. There’s no way CPJ finishes instead of Garland particularly given the wide disparity in three point shooting.

We‘ll be seeing more of him while DM is out, but when he and Strus are back I don’t think he gets rotation minutes.

I was more speaking to scenarios where we think it is "obvious" that he should be getting more PT. Like last night, and generally any time we are hurt and or playing B2B's. In addition to these logistics creating an "obvious" PT opportunity, the results on the floor, at least on offense, are generally positive. He plays passive at times because he is a smart rookie point guard but when he needs to score, generally good things happen. He's great at keeping the ball moving and hitting skip passes which is maybe the most critical pass for a team's offense to execute, especially one that lives and dies by the three pointers and dunks like we do now.

I'm also not convinced he is a bad three point shooter, he's just biasing towards deferring to his teammates. He is comfortable shooting it and I reckon he could hit one out of three if he had a green light and more attempts under his belt. His shooting numbers were slightly better than Okoros and his form is silky.

The only excuse I can think of that JBB would have to not be playing him is player development/punishment and missing defensive rotations. I would be a little more lenient if JBB is dangling PT like a carrot and he snatches it away when he sees defensive mistakes. But he's a decent defender on ball and he's a decent help defender in terms of blocks and steals and rebounds. Only gap might be defensive rotations. No other explanation I can think of...

Not playing a fresher Porter over LeVert who had played 12+ minutes and letting his higher energy levels slam the Hawks was ass coaching, pure and simple. That way the Shooters are there plus a resting Garland on the perimeter to help as needed. JB does it all the time.

At this point I really do think JBB is giving DG all the minutes in order to get DG in shape

Down Mitchell, Mobley, and Strus and with Wade back to petrified to shoot, and CPJ somehow -9 in just 3 minutes, I won’t complain about JB playing guys some extra minutes in an OT win on ESPN against the top seed in the West.

Just a masterclass in X’s & O’s from coach.

If that wasn’t some of the best coaching you’ve ever seen from an NBA sideline — you’re simply not qualified to be here…
