Josh Gordon discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He was all over Snapchat trashing the Browns, putting Browns gear in the garbage, etc.

We don't need that.

I'm willing to look past that considering we have no idea what transpired between him and the Browns. And considering the general turmoil in the front office and coaching staff he's been with the team through he may have some legitimate complaints. Sure, venting to social media isn't ideal but it's also a pretty standard practice nowadays.

And having said that... I doubt he's ever a consistently productive NFL player again. So, whatever.

The problem with Gordon is if you trade him? You're getting nothing for him, and he'd likely blow up with another team.

But he's also a malcontent and pissed at this team. So it's a lose-lose really.

You have his rights. May as well "use" him.

Who gives a shit about the league perception if he tests positive again after being reinstated. The NFL has their collective heads up their asses as if we all don't know people we work with that smoke it up on the side. Who cares?

Get him out there and see if he can help the team. If not, cut or trade him.

Agreed. His value to the Browns is currently nothing. The only way to increase his value is by showing the league he can still play. At that point you either trade him assuming he's going to blow it or you keep him hoping he can keep it together.

Though he's obviously talented, the Browns won't get anything for him until he proves he can play a full season without getting suspended. Given his contract and his known talent, he's essentially the ideal Moneyball player. Low-risk, high-reward.

If the guy is a total locker room cancer then you just have to cut ties. If he's fine in the locker room then there's no reason you shouldn't keep him on the team. He's shown the ability to be a top 5 WR in the league. He either gets suspended again and is done or he gets his shit together and we're golden. Either way, we've moved passed depending on him. Anything we get out of him is a bonus.

There is talk that Josh Gordon will be reinstated by the Colts game, which would be one year since he last left to go into rehab. The reports say he considers himself to be in the best shape of his life. Apparently he claims to be motivated to resume as a receiver in the NFL, that he regrets having cost himself millions because of marijuana and other issues. This is based on someone's first hand conversation with Gordon himself.

I'm just passing this information along. Take it for what it's worth.

I hope he's denied for life. I'm done installing belief in this guy. Being in the NFL is a privilege, only 1% of college kids make it and he was one, the one that shit it all away and set his organization and team back, made fans suffer more because he has gamechanging talent that went unused. He's a very selfish dude that doesn't need any praising. I'll celebrate when he's out the league. I won't have to worry about him fucking our team in a way whether with or against.

The guy has been given a lot of chances in his life and he has paid a price for his choices. If he truly has worked his way back and takes ownership of those choices than I am rooting for him. If he still blames other people for what has happened, well I don't have a lot of sympathy for him until he wakes up.

I don't understand this take.
I will gladly explain

I don't believe in Josh Gordon long term even slightly. I do believe, however, that he can go 12-16 weeks without getting in trouble and actually playing at a high level.

Right now Josh Gordon isn't in our long term plans and he isn't being counted on. I think we all clearly agree here and I think most agree this is the way it should be. My fear however is he comes back, stays out of trouble for 14 weeks, puts up a good season, and then we get suckered in again into making him a part of our long term plans. Josh Gordon is easily the least dependable player in this league. Yeah we will suck this year, but I can actually see this team being legitimately good in 2 years. It'd be a fucking shame if Gordon plays his way back into the teams long term plans just to completely fuck us over again for the 4th time 2 years from now when we might actually contend.

I'd rather he just never play again so we never even have the chance to foolishly depend on him again.

And I know people will say just proceed as if he is not even there and it's a bonus when he is, but what fucking team operates like that. Can someone tell me that they genuinely believe that if Gordon is reinstated and puts up 1300 yards that we still be as likely to draft a WR with our first pick as if he doesn't get reinstated? I feel like anyone answering yes to that question is being naive. That's the crux of why I hope he just never plays again.

I won't trust the guy as far as I can throw him. But I would never close the door or deny anyone the chance to mature as a person or as a player. He has paid a high price for his own stupidity. Now to be sure he has the strongest financial motivation to finally turn his career around. So far nothing has worked, and nobody knows with this guy if anything will work for him, he has to figure it out inside his own head.

The only thing I do trust is that Hugh and Sashi won't let this become a distraction. Gordon has to prove himself with every move he makes for the rest of his career, IF he manages to salvage a career. That remains to be seen.

Fair enough. We're in agreement (see my post above that I was typing before your post that I quoted).

For me if we can redeem him as an asset then I'd gladly trade him for another player or a pick after he's shown he can still play. Since we're not a playoff team IMO we don't stand to lose by giving him a shot as long as he is impeccable in his behavior. Then, if it helps people sleep at night, cash him in on somebody so we have a clean slate. At any point the plug can always be pulled.

I can definitely get behind playing him all season (would help Kizer a ton) with the intention of trading him if he puts up a big year. I just don't want to put us in a position of depending on him again. If he puts up a 1300 yard season which he's obviously capable of I think some contendor would bite the bullet and take the risk for a second rounder.

Yeah...Josh Gordon set the team and organization back :chuckle:

So it wasn't the 15 years of poor drafting, incompetent front office, and bad coaching hires?

Browns knew Gordon's history when he was drafted. They knew he was a major risk. Gordon is 100% responsible for his actions, but the Browns drafted him knowing he'd been kicked off two teams in less than two years. What do you expect at that point?
