JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I wonder if we don’t trade TT if he will stay in Cleveland on his next contract. He is the longest tenured on the Cavs roster.

If I'm TT and Rich Paul, I would be pushing for TT to be traded to a contender. TT on the open market isn't going to get alot of money. If he traded to a cap struck team he could leverage it to getting alot more if he preforms in the playoffs. He will want to be somewhere that values his bird rights.

It's just hard to see a team picking TT if they went to open up cap space and wanted to be players in free agent on the open market.

I understand that Cavs fans hate TT and he obviously has some shortcomings as far as his health is concerned. However, he is probably a great asset to have when most of your scoring is going to come from long range shots and you need an elite rebounder. In fact, I would say TT and Love are almost necessary to keep going forward.

As for JR...I really think the Cavs just cut him. They need the cap room and I'm not sure the organization is committed to paying the tax for the upcoming year.
I don’t hate TT. He has his offensive shortcomings on the basketball court obviously. He is a solid defender & rebounder and always has been. He was part of the championship team and will always hold a special place in my heart, as a result.

What TT does in his personal life is up to him. What was once private is now public and that’s especially true when you choose to date one of the Kardashians. TT has put himself in the public eye, as a result, and brought much of the scrutiny upon himself. He’s made some poor choices and they’ve become magnified because of who he’s chosen to associate with.

I think they are cutting JR to get under the tax now that they got Porter for less money. I don't blame them at all. Getting theteam under the tax is a move that most teams would have made even earlier. If we can do it just by letting JR expire, it's cool.

Really it was a good contract and good opportunity, but so many teams were creating cap space for this summer, that it really devalued the inherent value a structure like that would have given.

Riffing off of something Ben tweeted on the RCF account but would the Cavs possibly look to stretch a player like Knight or TT to adjust their tax number for this season so that we can still ultilize JR to pick up a future pick w out hitting the TAX.

We have way more expirings than we could trade at the deadline for a pick. Wouldn’t hurt to try this strategy

This is what I was told during the season when I asked why folks around here thought we could get something for JR, when there was so much cap room in the league and teams would know that were almost at the tax line killing our leverage.

Anyways, it sounds like the team doesn't want to put long term dead money on the books either? Why are the cons to using that stretch?

I'm 100% in favor of trading JR for a contract and 1st round pick or a young player on a rookie contract followed by stretching Knight (or whoever the Cavs get in return for JR provided they’re an expiring).

Just makes too much sense.

Been mentioned in this thread before but we have a perfect cap situation to stretch a player. Like it actually makes sense given all our expiring contracts and where we are in the rebuild.

Unrestricted? We need to be on that one. Could probably even flip Teague at the deadline.

Teams don't trade unprotected 1sts in salary dumps anymore after the Baron Davis trade.

Just what we need. Another short Guard with sub par playmaking ability.

Actually hes decent. Had 8 APG last year. Idk why I always remembered him being more of a shooter then a facilitator.

They have to be getting offers for that JR contract. Its just too perfect of a piece that teams wouldn't want it.
The question is do the cavs pull the trigger on it?
The heat is also still looking to shed salary to get under the tax.

Well they’re not going to be a bottom 5 teams. If we can get them to give him a top 5 protected pick or maybe even top 10 I’m sure they’ll be good enough.

Even if we wasn’t a good playmaker who cares. We wouldn’t be doing it for the player it would be for the pick. Buy him out for all I care.
