JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The T'Wolves had the 10rh worst record in basketball last season. Even if they improve a bit, that could be late lottery or maybe 15-18 range.

That would be the ideal use of JR's contract.

A non-contending team with cap room, like Atlanta, New Orleans, Sacramento, or New York, will take on Teague and/or Dieng if it will net them a first round pick. JR’s contract is not it as advantageous as it will still count $3.5 million towards their cap. Additionally, the Cavs aren’t anxious to go further into the luxury tax unless it’s an absolute no brainer of a deal.
This is where timing and JRs deal is unique.

SAC, NY, and New Orleans will all likely be looking to add players in FA. They aren’t going to rent out that cap space until they know for sure that all their targets are going elsewhere.

MIN would need to clear that room just prior to the start of FA to make that max offer sheet offer to Russell(though he could be denounced by BKN and become a UFA)

So given that they need to move TWO big deals, the Cavs can help them in a huge way because we have no chance or way to sign FAs and we have JRs unique contract. The timing of FA and the hope that most teams have of targeting and adding 1-2 FAs with their cap space makes the JR trade still very possible IF the Cavs are willing to do it, go in to the tax, and then sort out dipping back down under it later

I have no desire to see Teague take dribbles and shots away from Sexton and Garland.

Dieng wouldn't be as bad as a fit but that contract is disgusting. We need a legit asset back.
I’m pretty sure you could flip Teague after taking on both in the initial trade. Probably once the first wave of free agency is over plenty of teams would be down for a year of Teague.

I don't think a JR deal will happen. It's just too expensive for a mid 1st round pick.
If Dan really want to spend the money, I guess we could trade him for somebody like Marvin Williams. 1 year deals only.
We just have so much dead weight on this roster already. I hate to add another.

We have so much 20-21 cap space it’s just not an issue

Unless you believe 1-2 full max players are going to be on the market and choose to come here(spoiler alert, won’t happen)

So we could in theory take on Dieng(if the draft compensation was enough), stretch one of our guys and STILL have 40-50M on cap space to use in the way the Hawks did with that Nets trade last week.

No, we wouldn't. Four players (Love, Nance, Sexton and Zizic) plus Cedi's cap hold account for $57.3 million in 20-21. Garland, Windler and Porter will add another 10.2 or so. Dieng adds 16.2 and 1/3rd of Knight is another 5.2. Add all that up and it's about $89 million. Add a few incomplete roster charges and you're over 90 million. With a 116 million dollar cap we'd have roughly 25 million, give or take. And that doesn't factor in next year's draft pick(s) or any 20-21 money we might take on by trading one of our other expirings.

Some of us need to take off the wine & gold colored glasses and just realize that JR’s contract, even counting $3.5 million, is not as valuable to a team looking that is looking to dump a contract. The goal for them is to get the contract off the books and to free up cap space. By taking back JR they are still going to be saddled with $3.5 million dollars on the cap. It’s not the ideal scenario obviously, which is why we are seeing teams with cap space absorb contracts and JR’s contract hasn’t been moved yet.

Not saying it will happen, but there are teams they could absorb 100% of Andrew Wiggins’ contract into their cap Space. Wiggins at least is a young player with potential.

There are 9 teams that could absorb Wiggins outright. Of those 9 teams, NYK, BK, Dal, PHI, LAC are big game hunting. BOS, likely will as well. Sac & IND both have key expirings in a year or two.

NOLA is the only wildcard. Not sure what they plan on doing with all the Laker trash they just acquired.

I guess what I am saying is he doesnt fit these teams timeline where as he could fit ours while also giving the wolves a chance to do it right.

That’s interesting because Wiggins is the player David Griffin drafted #1 overall in 2014, ahead of Joel Embiid. I tend to doubt it will happen, but stranger things have happened.

Andrew still has upside but didnt match his hype as a prospect. I think Griff will see what the Lakers guys give him and go from there.

A Wiggins redemption arc in Cleveland would be hilarious. I would almost give it a try just for the poetry. It's just too bad that the redemption part requires him playing well.

Andrew Wiggins has a negative VORP and a negative BPM every year he's been in the league. And he's owed $120 million over the next four years. Nobody's taking him off their hands.
While it’s likely that no one is willing to absorb Wiggins into their cap space, there absolutely are teams that would trade their bad contracts for him. Miami is one and they have expressed interest already.
