So, realistically, the Cavs had two broad options when LeBron left:
1) trade away every vet possible and tank. Hope to keep your pick this year and next year. Ideally add 3-5 young guys in the next two draft and hope that between them, Sexton, Zizic, and Cedi, you find two all-star talents and three guys that can be playoff contributors.
2) try to field a competitive team while developing your young talent. Open yourself up for free agency next year, and if you punt there, have a strategy to quickly launch into a true tank.
Personally, I like option #2 more, and I think the Cavs did as well when they re-signed Love.
First, it will be easier to rebuild when we do not have the cloud of owing Atlanta our first. Give it up this summer and then you are free of commitments. You will also have a lot of cap room to emulate the Hinkie strategy.
Second, and more importantly, Love’s basketball IQ and skillset make him an ideal pairing next to our three developing youngsters. It will let Sexton be bad while still playing a lot of minutes and developing. Moreover, Love’s ability to space and operate at the elbow is ideal for both Cedi and Zizic.
Ultimately, I think the Cavs trying to compete this year opens up more doors next year and beyond. I also believe that it is good for the development of our young guys.
