Koby Altman

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Chauncey has to take this job, right?

TV success is pretty fickle. This is his opportunity to transition back into the game at a very high level.

And if for some reason LeBron leaves in a season, nobody blames Chauncey for it. It would just change the nature of the role, but his leadership would be valued for an organization chasing titles or rebuilding.

I can't imagine how he could walk away from this offer.

Another problem is (besides the fear of LeBron leaving of course) is that Billups has a conflict of interest, He has said that Ty Lue is his best friend, and he also has a good relationship with LeBron.

I think that its going to be hard for him to be objective, and say for example "Hey Lue, the offense is a two man show ISO fest with zero motion or movement, and the defense is pure trash, how did this happen, how do you go from 3rd to 24th in defense Lue?"

I find it real interesting that these talks are taking so long. Chauncey clearly has some reservations and is doing his due diligence.

I sure hope Dan Gilbert has a backup plan because, when these decisions drag out, like this, there seems to be a good chance the candidate passes on the job. Of course, Gilbert would spin it as though he never actually made an offer.

I don't think Chauncey has any reservations. I think he's trying to maximize the amount of time he can communicate with players without the Cavs being accused of tampering.

To avoid this situation, and the unfairness to other teams in the league, I'd be fully in favor of a rule prohibiting someone from taking a GM position if they've had contact that would be considered tampering within the prior 30 days..

No offense, but I think you may be overthinking it. Decisions in free agency usually come down $$$. Since the Cavs are capped out and have only the MLE to offer, they can really only offer the chance to compete for a title alongside LeBron James. For veterans, who haven't won a title, like a Vince Carter, that sales pitch may resonate. However, younger players will take the cash every time. That said, Chauncey could be the greatest salesman in the world, but it still comes down to taking less money for the chance to compete for a title. It is what it is and I don't see what great advantage Chauncey would have to be able to legally tamper with free agents?!?

Just give the job to koby. If Chauncey's heart isn't into it then forget it.

I don't get why we aren't at least looking at other candidates on a media related scale. There isn't buzz about ANYONE else. Billups has upper hand. He's probably going to get more money than Griff would ever have been offered. Gilbert is going to screw things up big time.

Haven't been following this situation very closely. Why is Chauncey considered such a big "get" for Dan? Five years?? I know nothing about his management abilities. Has he been spoken of highly by others in the league? Is this like a John Lynch type hire?

Lots of questions on a Monday...

I agree. Chauncey doesn't have any front office experience anyways and would have to lean on others. Seems like he would be a PR hire. I'm a little confused about what he actually brings to the table as a front office executive?

Make Altman GM & Gansey Assistant GM. Both of those guys are very bright and David Griffin has said both are likely to become NBA GM's.

What if the delay is Billups trying to get his guys in the front office (gm etc...) before they announce anything? just a thought...

Usually? That's probably true. There are an awful lot that don't, especially when you start talking about vets who want to ring chase, or max guys who are going to get the same just about anywhere if they don't resign.

So in the Cavs position, where money is the last thing we can offer, having a prospective GM able to communicate freely with players is an advantage.

If you're Dan Gilbert, you move on at some point, right? Billups is certainly not the only guy qualified for the position. If anything, he's probably one of the least qualified.

What's Jerry Sloan up to these days? Just give him the job. He can be our Jerry west.
