I have to admit, I didn't think they could do it. After they beat the Rockets in March to make it three straight (over OKC, Denver, and HOU no less), I became resigned to the idea that this team would gun for that 8th spot. When they started to lose before the trade deadline, and we began to hear the rumblings about Sessions getting traded, I refused to believe. When Kyrie got hurt, and the team wouldn't set a timetable for Varejao, I started to get optimistic. After they won 2 of 3 a couple weeks ago, I was irate. I thought to myself, "this team has been given a chance to get back to where they truly belong, and they're going to blow it." But they did not.
Sure there were a couple bumps along the way. Winning at Washington without Kyrie and Jamison was unfortunate (damn you Gody!), and beating the Knicks at home was far from a pleasant surprise. But the way this team scratched, and clawed, and fought its way to loss after loss was nothing short of inspirational. They were 7.5 games back of New Orleans on March 12th. Going into April, they were 5 games back. They were still 5 games back with 2 and a half weeks left, but this team dug deep and pulled off a miracle.
My hats off to Gilbert, Grant, everyone in the organization (Lord knows I made a few accusations out of frustration, and I will happily admit I was wrong), and especially the players. Varejao once again hopping on the tank at the perfect moment. Jamison and Parker flawlessly driving the tank down the stretch. And all the other players who did their part to make sure that the tank stayed its course, even when some guys (Hudson, Gody) seemed determine to veer it onto the path of Perry Jones.
Bravo Cavs! Here's to May 30th, when we collectively hold our breaths and pray that a bunch of balls lead us to a man with a unibrow (no homo).
