Lonzo Ball

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I see almost no way Lonzo Ball ends up a full out bust. His game is extremely well rounded and he impacts the game in every way on the offensive side of the ball. He's a really unique player. Jason Kidd really is the best comparison for him.

If you're wishing for him to be a bust, it ain't gonna happen. Now...is he enough to sell a shit load of gear, that remains to be seen.

I don't think so. But I admittedly don't know shit about this scene. I don't buy athletic gear and never really have on any large scale.

Based on the limited play I've seen from him, he doesn't strike me as a guy whose game is going to sell at a high level early on, if at all. I agree that he's as sure of a thing as we've seen in a while, but the 'all around' game isn't necessarily what companies and consumers look for.

The closest example of a guy with tons of type who lived up to it fairly well but hasn't had a ton of endorsement success is John Wall. Wall, like Ball, didn't have a game that produced a lot of "WOW" moments outside of athletic dunks, but those are a dime a dozen.

Kyrie has his crossovers, Curry has his crazy 3s, LeBron and Durant are just basketball gods, etc.

Ball, as a player at a saturated position without a very aesthetically pleasing game, is going to struggle to sell his brand as he toils away on a bad team for a few years, IMO.

Being a Laker or a Celtic would definitely help, but I'm not sure how much in this era where the Lakers are an afterthought to the Warriors and the irrational Celtics love seems to be trending downward.

Ball would have been better off taking the route of a guy like Kyrie who signed on with Nike, built his brand up a bit like things like Uncle Drew, and finally worked his way into a signature shoe, IMO.

I'm interested to see how it plays out.

I heard the kids are allowed to visit their mom now...that's nice of Lavar. :(

A lot of GMS are going to get fired after this draft. I expect busts and tons of surprises after the lottery or in the late lottery.

They may have all agreed to share in their wealth collectively, the 4 of them, regardless of their individual contribution?

At least two of them were minors at the time any such "decision" was made, and the fact that they live at home and are dependent on their family hardly makes that a situation of remotely equal bargaining power.

There are often concerns about agents having "undue influence" over impressionable young kids, etc., but at least the kids are protected to some extent by rules limiting the percentages an agent is permitted to take. That's thrown out the window if the father pulls it all into one business.

Now, it is true there is no way to prove that Lavar Bell unfairly pressured/influenced his kids to agree to pool the commercial value of their talents, and to cut dad in for a piece. But this is a message board and not a court of law, so a lot of us simply look at the ancillary facts and decide which explanation is more likely.

For me personally, the part about him having designed the shoe he intended to market through his kids before they ever started playing the game is a pretty strong bit of confirmation that the decision wasn't really going to be left up to them in a practical sense.

Jason Kidd never had a signature sneaker though. There is legitimately nothing exciting about Lonzo. In fact, the only reason he's talked about as much as he is, is because of Lavar. I think people would be more likely to buy the Lavar 2s than the Zo2s... He's personality wise as vanilla as vanilla can get. As a player, he's never going to be in the position where he can be the best at one certain thing. I also don't think he's going to be able to rebound as well as people think. Especially at his weight... Dude weighs a lot less than 200 pounds at 6'6" and just from his frame I don't see him being able to put on much more muscle.

Anyway, Lavar put his foot in his mouth with the shoe deal issue and now that he's not going to get any partnerships from the big 3, he had to invest on his own and I doubt Lonzo is going to be able to move shoes...

He tells so many obvious lies whenever he's interviewed. It's difficult to tell what's true and what isn't.

Sometimes there's funny bullshit mixed in, but a lot of what he says and does is pretty concerning.

Here's what I think would be ideal... Lonzo is a damn good player but not flashy enough to sell product on his own.

Hopefully he's successful in the NBA to the extent that he doesn't fall apart as a human being and become a failure in his and his dad's eyes and get addicted to drugs. Then if and when the brand fails, maybe another of the big brands buy it out or he does get that deal with another brand.

Just hope the kid is successful, because Lavar Ball isn't just going to fuck off anytime soon.

I'm not sure Lonzo has the first step or finishing ability to be a top player. Don't watch college basketball that much but the way the Kentucky guys just went at him and how UK was able to switch slow bigs onto him and not get burnt is concerning.

Does Boston want a regular sized point guard to compliment there tiny sized one?

Can't shoot off the dribble, can't finish at the rim, can't defend, mediocre in pick and roll. He'll be an above average player

Dad just keeps getting worse. Good luck dealing with him Lakers, if he doesn't find a way to ruin his sons draft stock between now and the draft.
