I didn’t say he could beat him, just that he was remotely relevant. Nobody else could even ding him if they caught him off guard.

Well, Mantis can paralyze him, and obviously Stark can beat him, which is why Dr Strange gave up the stone to save Stark.

Thanos, unlike many of the other marvel villains, doesn't -think- he is evil. He sees himself as the "ultimate good guy", doing what has to be done, albeit "unpleasant", to "save" the universe.

He recognizes other pure, idealistic "good guys" like Cap, and Thor - he is not going to relish defeating or killing them. He isn't killing off half the universe for personal glory, but to make life better for the remainder. After he does so, he doesn't set himself up as a god over the remainder - he retires away to a small cabin, feeling though his huge "sacrifice" has been done, and he has fulfilled his purpose.

Thanos: ..It was beautiful. Titan was like most planets: too many mouths, not enough to go around. And when we faced extinction, I offered a solution.
Strange: Genocide.
Thanos: At random. Dispassionate, fair. Rich and poor alike. They called me a madman. And what I predicted came to pass.

Thanos: With all six stones, I could simply snap my fingers and they would all cease to exist. You know what I call that? Mercy.
Strange: Then what?
Thanos: I finally rest. Watch the sun rise on a grateful universe. The hardest choices require the strongest wills.

Thanos: "I saved you."
Gamora: "No, no, we were happy on my home planet."
Thanos: "Going to bed hungry. Scrounging for scraps. Your planet was on the brink of collapse. I was the one who stopped that. You know what’s happened since then? The children born have known nothing but full bellies and clear skies. It’s a paradise."

Thanos: Little one, it’s a simple calculus. This universe is finite, its resources, finite… if life is left unchecked, life will cease to exist. It needs correcting."
Gamora:"YOU DON’T KNOW THAT!"
Thanos: "I’m the only one who knows that. At least I’m the only one who has the will to act on it.

He sees himself as a savior, who failed to save his own people, and is now redeeming himself, by saving half the universe.
I believe this is the thematic reason he doesn't appear to fight "full on" and kill everyone who puts up a fight, necessary or not. I think he identifies with (or pities them) in a way. He wants to save people. He still needs to consider himself the ultimate "good guy"
All of this is why that smile as Thanos looked on the sunset is beyond epic.

Well, Mantis can paralyze him, and obviously Stark can beat him, which is why Dr Strange gave up the stone to save Stark.

Mantis was before he had the full gauntlet, and no, Stark can’t beat him, not even close.

Strange didn’t give up the stone to save Stark, he gave up the stone because that’s the exact series of events that needed to happen to replicate their 1 victory in 14 million+ possible outcomes.

I would say Strange's decision had more to do with making sure Thanos made the snap at right moment to trap Scott Lang in the quantum realm with no option but to go into the time vortex.

Agree with your whole post, but... Thor, even with Stormbreaker, has no shot. He caught Thanos completely off-guard. That's not likely possible again.

Thanos literally defeated the entire lineup of cosmic beings when he had all of the Infinite Gems.

The one shot they have, without Warlock, is the angle they're going with now; i.e., time-travel.

I don't really know much about Marvel outside of the movies, what is so special about Adam Warlock that he can defeat Thanos?

A few things....

For one, Adam Warlock stands outside of space and time; meaning, his actions are not necessarily linear, for one, but more importantly, this means that psychics or even those in possession of the Mind and Time gems cannot predict his movements. So no cosmic being can know what Adam Warlock is going to do ahead of time, making him 100% unpredictable.

Secondly, Adam Warlock (and Gamora) have a keen familiarity with the Soul Gem. My guess is that Gamora will take this role in Avengers 4 rather than Warlock. But, Warlock can use his knowledge with the Soul Gem to manipulate the other gems (as well as hide from the person that wields them) if they are in contact via the Gauntlet.

Third, since he's aware of how the Soul Gem works, if Warlock dies, he can be reborn as someone else (by transmitting himself from the Soul Realm into a recently deceased body). So he's not easy to get rid of...

Even with all of this, Adam Warlock can't walk up to Thanos and just punch him in the mouth. He needs (needed) literally every possible distraction imaginable just to get Thanos to marginally drop his guard, and even then it really didn't defeat Thanos.

In the end, Warlock really just created enough of a fight, a long-enough, protracted enough fight where Thanos' own self-doubt caused him to defeat himself. See, Thanos doesn't actually, truly, believe that he is worthy of being a god. He doesn't believe he, or anyone, should have that kind of power over life and the universe; even though that's his long-stated ambition. So subconsciously, Thanos may subvert his own plans.

Warlock was the one guy in the Universe who not only knew that, but knew how to cause Thanos to lose because of it.

Finally watched Infinity War.

So Doctor Strange had the time stone. Why didn't they go back in time to a time when they had common sense? Or I guess that is a paradox because you would need common sense to do that in the first place.

As far as they've shown the time stone only takes you back a handful of seconds, and even that was frowned upon heavily in the Doctor Strange movie.

Oh. That makes more sense I guess lol. I didn't see that movie.

By the time that Doctor Strange decides to use the Time Stone, it's too late. See the scene where he's going into the future and playing out all the scenarios? The only scenario he found was the path that they're currently on, but it included his own death.

You could argue that since his ability to use the Time Stone was so limited, that by the time he realizes the gravity of the situation, there wasn't much he could do in the near-past to prevent Thanos from winning.

Hope they bring back the Maw somehow. I really enjoyed his character and abilities.

If they go back in time, it's unlikely Strange/Parker/Stark end up on Maw's ship, so... he wouldn't end up getting off'd.

I'm watching season two of Luke Cage right now and I crack up every time he enters a room with a group of bad guys and they all open fire on him. Do these motherfuckers not know this dude is bulletproof?

Is it as slow as season 1? Not been impressed with Jessica Jones season 2
