Matthew Dellavedova

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So many good players in this draft. So many busts in this draft.

You know it was a horrible draft when Dennis Schroeder was the 6th best and Kelly Olynyk #8 that year.

The Cavs were screwed. Nobody was going to take Giannis #1 (he went 15th). At the time he was a skinny 6'9" Euro with an effective shooting range of about three feet. Nobody was going to take Gobert (he went 27th). And CJ McCollum wasn't in consideration for the first pick, either (10th).

The best the Cavs could have realistically done was probably taking Oladipo - a two-time All-Star who was in the conversation for the #1 pick, IIRC.

Five undrafted guys had better careers than Bennett, who was the most underperforming draft pick relative to his slot in NBA history.

But how do you draft Oladipo when you already have Irving and Waiters? Trading down was the right choice if they could have only found a partner.

To bad Gianis didn’t fall to 17 because Karasev was also a major bust.

Still, it worked out OK in the end with Dellavedova and a ring. It’s really hard to win it all, even with Lebron’s cheat code.

I really wanted Noel or Otto Porter Jr in that draft. Bennet was not even close to my radar. It all worked out but I think Bill Simmons sums up that night the best:

Yes I wanted Noel too. Bennett was too passive to take at 1. You have to take a dog

I don't think anyone wanted to trade up where it made any sense value wise. Sometime it's best just to take best player available and figure out the playing time while seeing who emerges as the best out of the 3. A team can always trade way the odd man out down the road.

Oladipo had a different skill set than Waiters when he was drafted. He was known for his defense, hard work, and how athletic he was. He was someone that could have been molded into what we needed.

I think I finally see it. Bennett only hit 35% of his shots during his rookie season because he wasn't allowed to shoot more. Fu Mike Brown!!! He was going to make it up in volume!

I think some of the problem with the 2013 draft was the transition the NBA was in. What you wanted out of center and PF was changing but it wasn't really fully formed yet. Also the importance of wings just hadn't emerged yet. Even now the NBA seems under draft productive college guards all over the board. Being a productive guard in college tends to translate fairly well to the NBA but they tend to get overlooked year after year.

If anyone here really believes Mike Brown is designing plays for the Kings and the #1 offense in the NBA instead of Secret Weapon Coach Delly, you just might be new to RCF.
